Almost no one is what they appear to be on the surface. Even Captain Randall, known for his daring rescues, must risk everything on this his last pre-retirement voyage. Only a bold move on his part can save the ship and its passengers. Will it work?The Ocean Liner is a riveting story that will keep you turning the pages well into the night. You'll feel as though the characters are old friends before long and you'll find yourself wandering the passageways of the SS Manhattan and waiting in the lines of Ellis Island. I also enjoyed the manner in which the author follows his characters once they are on American soil. I like a story that provides closure and this story does that. A very enjoyable addition to this author's stable of work.

If this book had an editor, he or she should be shot. There were unbelievable errors (Joseph Kennedy, Sr. was never a US senator, for example.) There were multiple neologisms, when perfectly good English words existed. Much of the Rosemary Kennedy background isn't supported by recent biographies and histories, and the type of lobotomy that she underwent was more akin to the "Ice Pick" type of procedure which pushed a sharp, pointed surgical pick through the nasal sinuses. Once in place, the surgeon twisted it around, destroying frontal lobe tissue blindly. I have not heard of patients giving feedback during the surgery.And yet, the plot keeps you engaged. I just wonder how Mr. Gabriel got published and who his publisher is. I've got a few manuscripts I would love to show them...

I really enjoyed this book. I love sea stories and at first thought that’s why this would be. It is not. It is a story about people and motivation and loyalty or lack thereof. It starts off as a story of escape. Jews leaving Germany and Europe as Hitler is rising. But the combination of the characters in the SS Manhattan contrasted with the atmosphere on U-113 makes for a thrilling adventure, but it also creates interesting studies of character.

A bit of a disappointment, to be honest. Famous real life people rubbing shoulders with the great unwashed. It all felt a bit forced - I mean suddenly Liz Taylor as a child appears in the book for a few pages but then vanishes. The ending too I felt was inconclusive but that will happen if the story jumps around as this does from character to character. I was left wondering who this book is about ? Is it Rosemary Kennedy ? Is it the German U boat sailor Hufnagel ? Igor Stravinsky ? Rachel ? Thomas ? Unfortunately the cast is so diverse that none of the people in it really tie the story line down. Not one of Mr Gabriel's best.

To be hated, disrespected because of ethnicity or disability remains the greatest tragedy. This book reminds us of so many who suffered the ethnic cleansing, religious abatement and lesser qualified humans in the eyes of Hitler and his Nazis, who lost their lives during WWII. The sacrifices families made to see their children to safety. The anguish in not turning around for fear of giving away a hiding place. The antisemitic throes of those US citizens who refused to acknowledge genocide. The shear will to overcome. To move on. To create a new life in a foreign land. A very humbling read. Would I have the courage, the wherewithal to make a new life? This book leaves you with the haunting history of lives forever entwined because of a shared voyage, their last chance of survival.

While fiction, this is a wonderful retelling of a US-owned ocean liner making the crossing from France and England to the US prior to our entry into World War II. There were a number of celebrities on this crossing (Stravinsky, Toscanini, the Kennedy Famlly --minus Joseph Kennedy, the US Ambassador to England at the time. The overcrowded ship also includes many people fleeing the war for new lives overseas. Well written and "difficult to put down." I read it from start to finish in one session! Highly recommended!

Very enjoyable historical fiction with enough reality to keep the story interesting. The characters and their behaviors added to the theme of the times. Appreciated closure at the end.

Maurius Gabriel writes with such poignancy and crisp depth. I love his novels as he weaves real events and people with an imagined closer look at how people might have felt and behaved. Looking forward to the next one.

An ethnographer's safari into the black-and-white world of Ultra-Orthodox Jews. To the subjects of this rare study, Heilman, an adherent of Modern-Orthodox Judaism, was both an insider and an outsider, and the resulting combination of partial access yet professional distance gives the author's voice a dynamism lacking in many sociological studies of comparable subcultures. Heilman (Sociology/CUNY) takes us inside the ritual baths, study halls, synagogues, kitchens, and bedrooms of these half-a-million singular denizens of Jerusalem and Brooklyn. While it is tempting to think of these pious black-hatted or scarved Jews as being somewhat medieval, Heilman explains how they are very much a modern and post-Holocaust reactionary phenomenon. The community is said to be reacting to the collapse of family values in general and to strong Jewish identification in particular. Traditionalism is so entrenched within members of this group that they perceive their own sages and community leaders to be inferior to those of previous generations. Nonetheless, to Ultra-Orthodox Jews a man's lifetime of devotion to sacred texts is considered to be an act of ``defense'' no less vital than any soldier's, and a rare divorce suit might allege that a husband was lax in his God-fearing or study habits. I believe that the title of this book is a play on the title of the other book Defenders of the Race: Jewish Doctors and Race Science in Fin-de-Siècle Europe. Since Judaism can be either of these two things (a faith and a race), then if "Defenders of the Race" came out, then "Defenders of the Faith" would have to be a close second.This book might work well read in conjunction with another book: Real Jews: Secular Versus Ultra-Orthodox: The Struggle for Jewish Identity in Israel by Noah Efron.Good points:1. At the very least, "Defenders of the Faith" recapitulates concepts such as Haskallah (The Jewish Enlightenment), "maskillim" (Enlightened Jews), "misnagdim" (Orthodox Jews with an emphasis on scholarship), "hasidim" (Orthodox Jews with an emphasis on spirituality) that were covered in the aforementioned book. But somehow this treatment was easier to follow.2. The book was fabulously easy to read, and Heilman has a good gift for storytelling that elevates this book past the status of a dry documentary that just chronicled events.3. Heilman seems to suggest here that Orthodox Judaism "hardened" sometime between the Holocaust and Haskallah. This is a good counter to another argument that I've heard that Judaism's move toward rigid Orthodoxy was after the publication of the Shulchan Aruch.4. Another topic that the author addressed was the poverty of the Eastern European Jews compared to the German speaking Jews-- poverty that continued even when those respective sets of Jews migrated to the United States. (Mentioned briefly in Greenspan's The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New Worldand Sowell's Migrations And Cultures: A World View.) It seems that Haskallah did not reach as far into Eastern Europe as it did to Western Europe, and so those Eastern European Jews didn't have the benefit of modernity.5. The book has a great index for all of the new terms that it defines. It also has a good number of references (I count 18 pages, with a good chunk of them being primary).There are some things that I felt were lacking:1. This book only dealt with Haredim in Israel, but there are also a large number of them in New York. Are Haredim in Israel representative of all of them everywhere? Or not?2. This author does not treat the Hasidim that he observes as a cult (even though their fixation on their Rebbes seems a bit......excessive). What makes them different from a cult? Or are they (I have not found a place where Heilman explicitly denies that they are.)Overall, this was much worth the second-hand purchase price.What did I learn?1. There is just SO MUCH bitterness, division and anger even within the Jews. Sephardim vs. Ashkenazim. Misnagdim vs Hasidim. Secular vs. Haredi. Hasidim of Sect X competing for adherents for Sect Y.2. We got a revisit of many of the holidays and examples of what people did on them. (The Purim Festival, for example, was a chance for Haredim to demonstrate what they would NEVER be, by dressing as that. Analagous to Halloween in Western countries.)

This book presented a suprisingly well-balanced view into the world of Israel's Haredim. Written from an outsider perspective, you'd expect the text to be overly critical and harsh. However, I was pleased to find that it wasn't.The author does a good job at portraying the life of the Haredim in a curious yet understanding way, while still being critical at appropriate times. Heilman does not rain down flattery but also does not shy away from asking difficult questions. While keeping an intellectually honest front, Heilman brings out thought-provoking discussions and presents perspectives that the rest of us outsides may not ever agree with, but can -- at the very least -- understand where the Haredim are coming from.There are not a great deal of books on the so-called "ultra" Orthodox Jews available, and many that are are horribly biased against the way of life that seems so extreme to many of us. Heilman's text is definitely one I'd recommend because it keeps middle ground, explores deeply but still manages to be respectful to his subjects.

Heilman is a student of Erving Goffman, and offers meticulous and insightful analyses of the haredi rituals he observes. He studies a category of Jews who insist upon their essential difference from the rest of humanity, and yet is able to communicate across these self-erected barriers. Marvelous, marvelous ethnography.

I opened this book with a great deal of suspicion, since I regard "ultra-orthodox" as a negative media buzzword that none of these Jews would ever use to describe themselves. Happily, the book turned out to be better than its cover, and is one I recommend. The author, Samuel Heilman, while not himself "ultra-orthodox," is a religiously observant Jew trained in anthropology, making him an insider-outsider who is well-qualified to journey into the Jewish sector of Old Jerusalem. His methodology is that of a "participant observer," learning about the culture by doing it with the people. (Only a religious Jew could undertake such a project among the very orthodox. A non-Jewish anthropologist would probably not be admitted to many of the gatherings and ceremonies, and, even if he were admitted, could not fully participate.) The book is well-balanced, presenting both the positive and negative aspects of the culture in a very readable format. Heilman combines personal experiences among the Haredim with well-written background information about the movement, making the book accessible to readers who might not be familiar with Jewish practices. I especially liked his descriptions of the different types of Hasidic gatherings, and his explanations of the spirit behind them. Unlike so many academics who write about Hasidism, he was able to see beyond the superficial plainness of the schools and synagogue buildings (often rather dilapidated) to the beautifully disciplined spirituality of the worshippers. At the same time, Heilman doesn't idealize the Haredi world. He covers the rebels and dissidents as well as the true believers. Readers should keep in mind that these groups are the extremes of the extreme within Orthodox Judaism. As Heilman explains in the Prologue, he rejected the American Hasidic communities for his study, because they were not the "genuine article" (his words). He chose the Jerusalem community because he felt it had made the least acommodations to the modern world. Heilman was specifically looking for extremes, and studied them in the same manner that one might study a "lost tribe" in the Amazon. Simple and clear instructions, relevant pictures! The author provides in-depth recipes information. Now I understand how this Dutch Oven Cookbook became so popular within such a short period of time. I wish we had more quality cookbooks like this one. Thanks to the author for creating a new book for all of us!

This is an excellent cookbook. The best feature is the short one page recipes. The types of recipes are unusual and sometimes exotic but also many old familiar stew recipes are included. I have tried 2 and both were easy and good tasting. These recipes are for a Dutch oven so nothing is short order or fast but the results of slow cooking are delicious. The book itself is colorfully illustrated and easy to manage while chopping ingredients.

I would not recommend this cookbook. it is of poor quality, not in color and does not have the same organization of a real cookbook. It looks like a teenage typed it on a typewriter. if I could get the full refund I would return it.

In general a good cookbook. I was disappointed with the quality of the pictures - only black and white.

This book gave me the best recipe I have found for a perfect roast chicken. Will never need another recipe book when it comes to dutch ovens!

David Haber, PhD , is an assistant professor in the Gerontology Department at Western Oregon University, Monmouth, Oregon. Prior to his current affiliation he worked at several institutes of higher education. For a decade he was the John and Janice Fisher distinguished professor of wellness and gerontology at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. For the decade prior to that, Dr. Haber was a professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Before that he served as the director of the Center for Healthy Aging, at Creighton University’s multidisciplinary shopping mall–based geriatric center in Omaha, Nebraska. His early academic and research career included positions at the University of the District of Columbia; the University of South Florida, Tampa; and the University of Southern California, where he also received his PhD in sociology from the Andrus Gerontology Center. Dr. Haber is a fellow in the Gerontological Society of America, and he is recognized for two Best Practice Awards from the National Council on Aging, the Distinguished Teacher Award from the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education, and the Molly Mettler Award for Leadership in Health Promotion from the National Council on Aging. The third edition of this book, Health Promotion and Aging, was selected for the 2004 Book of the Year Award by theAmerican Journal of Nursing in two categories: Gerontologic Nursing, and Community and Public Health. Dr. Haber also authored Health Care for an Aging Society. Dr. Haber has authored 87 academic publications and has been project director or principal investigator of 20 research or demonstration grants related to health and aging. Typically, these applied projects involved gerontology and health professional students leading community health promotion ventures with older adults. Dr. Haber’s current interest in life is cat therapy with frail elders.

I am in school to become a registered veterinary technician so this book was a requirement for our Pharmacology class. The first three chapters in this book are absolute Gold as far as information goes but the rest is really lacking. Many of the common veterinary drugs covered in my class were not even in the book so I had to go elsewhere to find all the information I needed. Although the drugs that were covered were covered well and in a friendly layout, the drugs they didn't include really diminished the usability of this book. A real disappointment as far as textbooks go in my opinion.

This book is awesome! It has provided me with so much knowledge of drug uses, interactions, reactions... etc. Working in a vet's office this book has been a great help to me. It talks at the veterinary technicians level, as opposed to reading a lot of information that just goes right over your head. It is geared from the nurses point of view and is organized into easy to find categories, with all the similar drugs listed near it, along with possible interactions/reactions. A must have for the vet tech!

One reviewer cited alleged Christian stuff in the Almanac. So I went and looked at what she cited as evidence, because I am all for avoiding Christian references in pagan or witchcraft works. But they just do not occur in this almanac.The first the reviewer gives as evidence of supposed Christianity in the Almanac is a quote from the book by Leland (of Aradia fame), wherein a witch in 1900 gives a retelling of the story from the book of Enoch (NOT a Christian text) about the Watchers and how they taught humans various arts and married some of them. The witch quoted translates the Watchers into the Fae and spins it as British folk belief. But it is simply the story from Enoch retold from the perspective of British folk belief. It's not Christian.The next example of alleged Christianity in the Almanac that the reviewer quotes is an article about marijuana that contains a reference to Rastafarians smoking marijuana to get closer to God. This is not exactly Christian agit prop, and that is as close as the article gets to anything Christian even in passing.The final example of supposed Christianity in the Almanac is a page discussing the Star card that came from Paul Huson's book on tarot. He says that some decks depicted the Star as the star of Bethlehem. That's a historical fact, not an assertion of Christianity. And that's all that is said about it.As for there being nothing about familiars, there's an entire article about familiars in there. There are also many articles about animals as they appear in folklore, in astrology, in paganism, in witchcraft, etc. Plenty for the witch's soul here.

What an extreme disappointment. Not even 30 pages in and I can't fathom reading any more of these excerpts depicting the Lord and father as our creator and the tarot being symbolic of the birth of Jesus.... Umm WITCHES almanac? We believe in the balance of the feminine and masculine divinities, but our lean is feminine. Especially in terms of creation. Not to mention, this test is supposed to have something to do with familiars and friends and I have yet to read anything on the topic. The closest mention to anything even related to familiars was an excerpt by Ivo Dominguez on page 21 which discussed the spirituality of animals.Honestly, I only get this book anymore for the calendars and horoscope, but even the horoscope seems to get weaker every year in detail. At this rate, I can purchase the witches daily planner and get as much useful info and more with material and excerpts that are at least Pagan and Witch focused. Or did we forget who pushed paganism out of our lives to begin with.To each their own, but the witches have been done an injustice in the development of our practice to be more inclusive to Christianity and have only intern adopted the practices of Christianity. Soooo why call yourself a witch? Did you hear that you can make it whatever you want? Sure, you can... But if you miss the point of a witches beliefs then just call yourself an agnostic. That is more likely what you were looking for when you thought you'd give being a witch a try.I don't know if I can keep purchasing this.

Anyone who knows anything of the Tarot knows that the tarot (particularly the Marseilles deck which predates Rider-Waite-Smith) was strongly influenced by the Christian religion and based on religious parades called Triumphs or Trumphs in Medieval Times, which is where we get the name "Trumps" for the Major Arcana before we had the term Major Arcana. The idea that someone is accusing Paul Huson of not only being a witch but pandering to Christianity is the most laughable thing I've ever heard at best and offensive to him as a Pagan Elder. PAUL HUSON! Pick up a copy of his classic Mastering Witchcraft and you will QUICKLY see that Huson is far from promoting Christianity in Witchcraft.Marijuana - Da Ma by Ellen Evert HopmanThe reviewer posts a picture mentioning Rastafari beliefs in the Bible. What the reviewer neglects is that it's one line in a long history that Ellen is laying out regarding the religious and spiritual history of marijuana. She goes over Chinese, Egyptian, Indian, African, Japanese, Taoist, Korean history and much more. Ellen Evert Hopman is a druid. There's no way that she's promoting Christianity in her article.The Witchcraft of Dame Darrel of York by Charles Godfrey LelandThe last picture the reviewer posts is an excerpt from the classic "The Witchcraft of Dame Darrel of York" by folklorist Charles Leland. Leland was perhaps the largest influence on Modern Witchcraft, particularly his "Aradia: Gospel of the Witches" which deeply influenced Gerald Gardner and his Wicca. The fact that Leland talks about "The Father Creating" while talking about the origin of faeries, isn't a promotion of Christianity. Leland is a folklorist and anyone who knows the tiniest bit of the old faery faith and its history knows that there's a long Christian influence in those beliefs, just as there is Witchcraft whether we want to rewrite history or not to exclude it.The reviewer claims there's only ONE article about familiars. That's absolutely not true. Just skimming through the book there's AT LEAST 21 ARTICLES related to familiar spirits both as animals and as non-animal spirit companions (as per the traditional view).In other words, the one star review is bunk and the person doesn't know what they're talking about or much about witchcraft at all. Arguing against the antique writings of Charles Leland, the writings of the influential witch Paul Huson, and the druid Ellen Hopman as somehow pushing a Christian agenda is absolutely ludicrous.

I was impressed by the articles and the timeliness of the issue. (My friend, the Goddess Bastet, is assisting me in making a familiar of my ghost cat this week.) There's some thoughtful stuff in this one, if you have a familiar or are thinking of obtaining one, might be worth it to pick up a copy.

I buy one every year and keep them in my library. There is a lot of nice information that you can use from year to year thanks to the way they change the focus of the content. Great series for any Witch.
