My daughter is 4, is a bit shy, and has a hard time reaching out to other kids because she's worried she's going to be rejected. Based on all the great reviews, I had high hopes that this book would give us some suggestions on how to initiate play and make new friends. The first thing I noticed is this book is pretty long for a kids book (about 30 pages) and too wordy to hold my daughter's interest (perhaps it's intended for slightly older children). The main reason I disliked this book, though, is the brown pencil doesn't have any friends is because according to himself, he says, "I complain a lot...at times I'm disrespectful and I usually wear a frown...I hardly ever laugh but the others laugh at me." One of the other pencils tells Brown, "...you never laugh and you always put us down. You think our opinions are silly...you like to disagree with everything we say...you always complain...you don't even try to understand where we are coming from..." Yet another pencil tells Brown, "...you can't expect the other colors to like you if you don't like yourself." It does have some good points where Brown follows some of the suggestions from the other colors, like smiling at others, giving Blue a hug when she was feeling bad, and listening to what Purple had to say rather than rolling his eyes and ignoring him.Overall, I feel this book is way too negative and is not really worded well for a book geared toward children. I will be returning this one. I found the Cheri J. Meiners book, Join in and Play, much more useful.

the subtext is somewhat implicitly racist. I'm irate - I am a therapist and bought this for reading to youth in bibliotherapy. I was shocked to preview it and discover that the "brown crayon" hates himself for being brown. If you're a brown youth (person of color), that kind of messaging is really strikingly obvious. We don't need more subtextual racism in this fragile era - positively reinforcing hatred (and self-hatred) of brown-ness is one potential consequence of this book. Literally any of the other colors could have been chosen to animate - but the author chose brown. Grey, for example, could be inserted verbatim and at least would be racially neutral. I can't believe this got past an editor at Boy's Town Press.

I usually don't purchase new books without seeing reviews but I immediately bought this one and I wasn't disappointed. Julia Cook's books have been useful. As an elementary school counselor I'm always searching for books on friendship. There don't seem to be many out there on how to make friends and what to do if you have friendship problems. Although I also recommend "How to be a friend" by Marc Brown and "My friends and me" by Pat Thomas. I look for books that will appeal to 6-8 year olds. I've already used this book with groups and it's worked out well.So for the plot: The Brown colored pencil feels alone and left out. A few of the other colored pencils tell him he needs to be a good friend to make friends. Each of the colors has a specific positive quality. Brown is a combination of all the other colors so he has those qualities within him. He takes their advice and begins to recognize his own strengths. He changes his ways and does things to try and help out the other pencils. He feels better about himself and now has friends. The story did repeat some things to try and make the story hit home but I'm not sure it was necessary. A couple of pages almost felt out of place and were a little too long. For instance, towards the end Brown listens to a presentation on how to take over the art supply market. He was doing this to support his friend but I don't think the audience this is geared to would understand the situation, nor did it add to the story.Overall, the book has a good message that resonates with children. It is easy to use in discussion regarding friendship and self esteem and I would buy it again.

I bought this for my son, who needed a reminder of how to behave in a way that would make more friends. Not only does it teach a good lesson, but it's a fun read! It's a much better story than some of the other books we've read that are aimed at being friends. The characters are a little more believable than some of the other friend books and the main character echoes some real complaints that my own son has made in the past. I would definitely recommend this book to another parent whose child needed a gentle reminder.

Nope this overly wordy story misses the mark. The presumption is something is wrong with you and that’s why no one likes you. The villain of the story is a lonely, grouchy, jealous crayon who is rude to all the kind more popular crayons. Once he changes and talks to them they find common ground. The moral is change yourself to make friends. There are some basic social skills taught but the lesson that the other crayons should make effort too is left out entirely and the fault is laid on the lone crayon. Wrong message and way too wordy for the ages it’s written for. Almost insulting.

As a pediatric nurse, I really appreciate Julia Cook's books! However, this is my favorite!! Wonderful way to teach children good character traits and help them see how they can improve friendships. More importantly, this book is my 7 year old daughters favorite book! This book is great for kids who feel left out or do not pick up on social ques as quickly as others may. It is also great for the child who tends to see the glass as half empty. Help your kid feel confident and use his "colors" Another excellent child self-help author is Dawn Hubner. Wonderful book on anxiety for kids.

I really like this book. I'm a school counselor and use this book with second graders to introduce the topic of "Friendship". Julia Cook's book are generally a big hit with all my peers and students.

My kiddo is autistic and these books are written and illustrated so well. They follow similar to our social stories we use. And the author address so many issues kiddos these days face, including mine. Highly recommend her books, we have many of them!

I cannot read this series anymore. The author cannot seem to actually capture the era in which she CHOSE to write. She, makes constant, and increasingly overt, progressive condemnations of the culture at that time, when it does not help the storyline., even when it hurts the storyline. Why she would choose to write in a timeframe she can't understand is perplexing.I enjoy reading to learn more about the times before. While I don't expect those days to be presented in fluffy perfection, I do expect the writer to at least refrain from constantly interjecting personal political, contemporary points of view. I read historical "mysteries" to escape, not to be lectured. So, if you are not solidly in the Progressive Political camp, this may not be your cup of tea.

This is a terribly disappointing novel. I have read every one of the Maggie Hope mysteries but this may be my last. The plot doesn't justify the length, and it felt to me like a bad Agatha closed room mystery. The characters were never developed at least in my mind and I read far to many pages waiting for the inevitable unmasking to occur. Maggie is a great character, but his book is too slow to develop an unconvincing in resolution. I wish we were back in the old Winston, Eleanor, Princess Elizabeth days. I think its farewell for me.

I received an ARC from NetGalley of this mystery in exchange for an honest review; however, I also purchased the book. The Prisoner in the Castle is different from the others as it's written in the vein of Agatha Christie. Maggie Hope isn't on a regular mission -- she's in a castle with other spies who begin to disappear. If Maggie can't figure out whom she can trust and why fellow spies are being eliminated, she may be next. The Prisoner in the Castle is a non-stop rollercoaster ride of thrills and twists. I loved it and highly recommend it!

The author consistently makes errors of detail that, to me, detract from the overall story. Such things as Spitfires flying over Germany early in the war; why? Spitfires did not have the range to fly there and back while doing anything useful. They weren't bombers or capable of flying escort at that distance. In this book, the author states that the radio on the supply boat is used for voice communication, but later, when the enemy agent is communicating with the submarine, an interception of Morse code comms is made. Although some radios of the era were capable of both forms of communication, they generally were capable of one or the other as the frequency bands used were different. Also, although the drama is good for maintaining reader interest, there is too much angst and 'soul-searching' for my taste. Maggie Hope is left dangling at the end of the book; does she quit working for the government in disgust at the lack of trust in her or does she return to the fold as a good British subject?

I enjoy the Maggie Hope novels because of their well researched history. At first I thought of MacNeal's novels as light reading .However, her stories have become more and more compelling as she has continued Maggie Hope's adventures . This latest adventure is an homage to Agatha Christie's novel And then there were None which is referred to in the story, under its original title. The story is gripping and well written and hard to put down .It brings home the fear and uncertainty of Brittain fighting literally for it's survival. Excellent read.

I love this series. Probably going to need to reread the first 3 books to remind myself that I like it. This book was way too much like the Agatha Christie book, And Then There Were None. I saw the movie version of it and it was amazing. At first I didn't mind the clearly inspired plot. But Macneal didn't even change the murderer! The murderers in both stories are the paralleling characters! Such a disappointment. Also upsetting halfway in the book when you realize the prologue was pointless. Also, a lot of repetition in dialogue. Basically all the characters in the book are filler. The reason Agatha Christie's characters worked so well was because they all had back stories that tied into the reason they were killed off! Maybe the next one will be better since Maggie will be back in London. I just hope the author isn't getting tired of Maggie and it's showing in the writing. Overall, did not like this book.

From the Back Cover

When it comes to photography, it's all about the light. After spending more than thirty years behind the lens-working for "National Geographic," "Time," "Life," and" Sports Illustrated"-Joe McNally knows about light. He knows how to talk about it, shape it, color it, control it, and direct it. Most importantly, he knows how to create it...using small hot shoe flashes. In "The Hot Shoe Diaries," Joe brings you behind the scenes to candidly share his lighting solutions for a ton of great images. Using Nikon Speedlights, Joe lets you in on his uncensored thought process-often funny, sometimes serious, always fascinating-to demonstrate how he makes his pictures with these small flashes. Whether he's photographing a gymnast on the Great Wall, an alligator in a swamp, or a fire truck careening through Times Square, Joe uses these flashes to create great light that makes his pictures sing.

The book gives a lot of insight into the "day in the life of a flash photographer pro" but as others have said there are no real "how to's" with this. If you're looking for an info graphic style step by step break down this isn't it. "Diary" is a good word for this book. The design of this book more or less to allow your mind to sort of absorb this photographer's process and potentially gain your own unique knowledge and approach to your own flash photography out of it. The author's use of slang and loose grammar is amusing and somewhat refreshing but does start to get old as you get into the book and seems a bit forced in order to "be cool" after a while. Also as others have said it also does seem as though this guy is getting a kick back from Nikon because it's all he talks about...Nikon this NIkon that; Nikon, Nikon, Nikon.

This book does NOT explain basic photography concepts like shutter speed, aperture size, ISO, Aperture priority, Manual Mode, or how to use all the buttons and dials on your camera. What it does do is make you think !!I have a wedding venue and have taken a lot of photos and processed them with lightroom.I know the basics of photography, and I have read a lot of beginner to intermediate photography books. Most of those books repeat a lot of what I learned from the other books.I use a flash for most of the indoor shots and a lot of the close-up outdoor shots. I use a softbox or umbrella when I have time to set them up. If the available light allows I will go without a flash. If time allows I will use manual mode instead of Aperture Priority.I've had photographers come to my venue with no flash and a couple of primes(natural light fanatics). In a lot of their photos the background is washed out and the bride and groom have too much noise from high ISOs, or the depth of field is way too shallow from opening the aperture too far to get more light in. Some fill flash would have helped with this situation. After taking and processing thousands of photos, I am plagued by some questions that mostly concern exposure and lighting.I've only read the first 100 pages of this book and some of those questions are being dealt with. Often times there are no black and white ways to deal with different lighting conditions. Joe goes into this and tries to help you "Think about what you are doing". Many books will show you a photo and tell you where they places flashes and what settings they used and what wall they bounced light off of. If you don't have a wall to bounce off then what ???I have been waiting for a book like this to come along and I hope more of my questions will be answered.I will finish this review after I have finished Joe's book.UPDATE:I've now read the first 200 pages. One of the reviewer said that he read half the book, didn't get anything out of it, so gave it up. He said " I cannot figure out for the life of me what it is he's trying to teach you but it isn't lighting." Maybe he is much more advanced than I am or maybe he wants clear-cut exact answers to different lighting situations, or maybe he wants to do controlled studio lighting ? No two situations are alike so you can't just duplicate the f-stop, shutter speed, ISO, flash placement, diffuser, umbrella, etc and come out with a perfect photo.I've read "Captured by the Light", most of "Picture Perfect Lighting", "On Camera Flash" and various other books dealing with lighting so I do know something. Even after reading these books I felt that something was missing ! What was missing was using my own brain to figure out how to light a photo shoot and produce the 'feeling' that I want when looking at the finished photo. Do I want soft red light, hard blue light, directional light, no shadows, soft shadows, hard shadows, lots of ambient light, no ambient light, should I use a diffuser or an umbrella, 1 speedlight or 2 or 3 ??? This book has helped me deal with these questions.I'm doing some family photos in a couple of days(inside and out) and I feel that I can choose a location, look at the existing light and make some informed decisions about how to use existing light and most likely diffused off-camera flash. I certainly don't have all the answers but I feel more confident now. The outside of our venue is in a cleared forest with very tall mature oaks. During the day the light can filter thru the trees and produce harsh lighting conditions. It's a beautiful location with challenging lighting.(large diffusion panels help)Off the back of the barn is a deck enclosed with transparent vinyl panels. We get pretty good diffused light coming in thru the panels but often times the subjects face is shaded due to the direction of the sun. Without using a flash, the faces are dark with a properly exposed forest or the face is exposed correctly and the outside is blown out. Mr McNally spends a fair amount of time dealing with issues like this.Joe McNally tells stories throughout the book, this disturbs some readers, but to me he is trying to make a point and for me these stories make sense. They may not have when I was first starting out in photography. Sometimes his language is a bit off-color but that doesn't bother me. I think he is a very experienced photographer and I pay attention to what he says.Read these books -Read this first - "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan PetersonRead this second - "Captured by the Light" by David Ziser. Then read - "The Hot Shoe Diaries" by Joe McNallyWhat I think - Read this book, take a few hundred or thousand photos, read the book again and repeat. Thanks,Monty

Flash photography is one the things that I simply have not mastered. And it's not from a lack of trying. For some reasons, my mind just does not connect with those strange speedlight flash settings. Aperture, shutter speed, ISO, rule of thirds, file formats, etc. I've got those down cold. But that blasted flash evades me.This is why I found "The Hot Shoe Diaries: Big Light from Small Flashes" by Joe McNally to be such a valuable read. McNalley knows what he's doing with his flashes, manages to take some incredible shots (many of them are included in the book) and has a down-to-earth way of communicating what he knows to his readers.Does the book have any shortcomings? Sure, all books do. McNalley is a Nikon user and specifically discusses Nikon products throughout the book. However, if you are a Canon, Sony (or whatever brand you own) user, you can easily apply what he says to your gear. Simply translated Nikon SB-800 or SB-900 Canon Speedlite 430EX or whatever you happen to use.The other shortcoming is that McNally's cutesy conversational style (with some profanity tossed in as well.) This becomes waring at times. However, if you can overlook the verbiage, you will gain a significant amount of insight from an established pro on almost every aspect of speedlight flash photography.Highly recommended.

I picked up a great deal of terrific information about using flash from "Diaries", but only because I recently finished a 3 day workshop on flash photography. Without that workshop I would not have understood very much of the information in this book. If you want basic information to get you started using speedlights/speedlites, don't buy this book. If you already know the basics (how to use Flash Exposure Compensation, how to set up multiple flashes and set Flash Ratios, etc.), this is an excellent book to improve your skills. You will pick up many, many techniques that it would take months to learn on your own.It is written using Nikon equipment as the examples, but I shoot Canon and I didn't find the numerous Nikon references to be a problem at all. This book is not a 'cookbook' anyway, it simply talks about how to get different effects from your flash...but it uses a huge amount of difficult to understand jargon. Reading this book is like talking to a computer geek. He throws in so many terms that have meaning only to him that it is easy to become exasperated.Hang in there, though, and you will learn some new stuff...

I purchased this copy used. It arrived fairly quickly and in the condition described by the vendor (sort of worn but not bad). I was surprised by the number of pages! I'm using it for researching various ethnic groups/hairstyles for dollmaking, and this book is a treasure trove of current and past hairstyles...I don't think an area of the world has been missed, and I don't see where I'd need any additional resource for research. The illustrations are clear and detailed. I'm happy with it!

I bought this book for research purposes for writing. This book contains some thousand drawings of hair styles from around the world. It's tells the regions the styles are from, but not the actual style names. The drawings are decent, usually between 1 and 4 to a page, ocsasionally more.

#23,751 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I first read this book 50 years ago and then took from it one basic idea that has guided my reading ever since...That one idea was that every good non-fiction book deserves 3 readings. The purpose of the first rapid read is to get an overview of the general thrust or central thesis of the book. The second reading involves digging in, an attempt to understand and analyze the author's central argument or thesis, and the third reading is for the purpose of argument, i.e., of reflecting on where we agree with the book and where we disagree, and why...50 years after that first reading, i still try to follow the advice (above), and find it as helpful and true today as it was back then. So, what in particular did I gain in from my current reading of this fine book, this gem? Three or four things, all of which are, at least to me, important.First, re the value of reading the intro or the preface in which the author often says specifically and explicitly what his central thesis is.Second, re the value of reading the last chapter or even the very last 8 to 10 paragraphs in which the author may, once again, summarize the whole central purpose and argument of the book, which gives you a key to understanding the work in its entirety. And, third, don't begin arguing with a book until you are certain that you have understood it as well as you possibly can.Bottom-line, I'm happy that I went back to reread this fine book.

I have always had a nagging feeling that I didn’t know how to read well. This book showed me that I was right. But it also showed me that I wasn’t expected to know how to read well (not with the kind of education most of us receive) and that I wasn’t alone in my ignorance. Reading well involves hard work and precise skills. This book provides the latter — the former is up to us.We take reading for granted because we are supposed to be fully alphabetised at around tenth grade. We are not told that this is just the first level of reading — Elementary Reading (Part 1, Ch. 3) — when you learn to recognise the written symbols and to convey meaning from them. You learn how to grow your vocabulary on your own and to transfer and compare concepts from different reading materials. But most of us stop there. And from there we live the rest of our lives treating books in undeserving ways, wasting too much time on the bad ones and granting so little time to the good ones. The great ones, we hardly read, because they scare us.The problem of wasting time can be drastically diminished by applying the second level of reading — Inspectional Reading (Part 1, Ch. 4). This level means “skimming systematically” to grasp as much as you can from a book in a limited time-frame (possibly just a few minutes). That was an important skill on Adler and Doren’s time when libraries were the norm, but it is even more important now when you have digital previews of a plethora of books in services such as Amazon. If “Customer’s Review” sections existed during their time, I am sure they would also have devoted a portion of Chapter 4 to provide insights on how to better profit from them. The problem of spending little time on the good (or great) books can only be solved by the third level of reading — Analytical reading (Part 2). Without it, you either refrain from reading a good book altogether (specially a great one) or you read it badly. “Reading badly”, the book explains, is to read passively. Reading analytically is very active and it is hard work. To help us in this endeavour, the book provides extensive advice on how to physically mark the books we read (Part 1, Ch. 5). These note-taking techniques are indispensable to read well and the reader is advised to experiment with them and adapt them to his own style of understanding and to the new types of media now available. To read analytically you have to ask yourself a number of questions while reading and you must make your best to answer them yourself. The authors present these questions in sequence, but they are quick to explain that in practice (and with experience) we should try to answer them mostly simultaneously.First, you need to know what the book is about as a whole (Ch. 6 and Ch. 7). This means first categorising the book, then expressing its unity in as few words as possible. You should then proceed to outline its main parts, each of which should be treated as a subordinate whole and have its unity also expressed. This process could continue ad aeternum, but “the degree of approximation varies with the character of the book and your purpose in reading it”. At the end, you should have identified what questions the author wants to answer himself. After this more “descriptive” stage, you should now try to grasp the author’s message (Ch. 8 and Ch. 9). This means first reconciling the grammatical and the logical aspects of what he writes by matching his chosen words with the terms they express. Only then you can identify the important sentences and paragraphs (the grammatical units) in order to establish the author’s leading propositions and arguments (the units of thought and knowledge — the logical units). Once you have reached actual understanding by identifying and interpreting the author’s terms, propositions and arguments, you can now evaluate if the author has answered the questions (the problems) you identified earlier. You and the author are now peers and the best thing you can do now is to praise him by criticising his book (Ch. 10 and Ch. 11). However, in order to do so, there are rules, just like there are rules to reach understanding — there is an intellectual etiquette grounded on rhetorical skills the reader must possess. You should understand first and only then criticise, but not contentiously or disputatiously. You may disagree based on the author’s lack of information, misinformation or reasoning fallacies. You may also judge the author’s completeness as faulty. But the most important maxim is to do so with the sole intention of conveying and discussing knowledge, not opinions. “Knowledge consists in those opinions that can be defended” and “opinion is unsupported judgement.” You must be sure to distinguish between both.So you have described the book, you have understood it and you have criticised it — now what? This is the last (and possibly most important) question you should make. If the book has enlightened you, even if just a little, you must go further — you might even have to act upon it. I like what the authors say about this question applied to historical books: “The answer to the question lies in the direction of practical, political action.” History shows what has been done, so it is a lesson of what we can do or avoid doing. In the same way, whatever the kind of enlightenment you had by reading the book, you have had a glimpse of truth — you can’t ignore it now that you know it.Part 3 is useful in that it provides some interesting aspects of specific types of reading material, namely practical books, history (including biographies and current events), imaginative literature (including plays and poems), science and mathematics, philosophy and the social sciences. While a pleasure to read, it is not imperative that you do so if you have fully grasped the analytical reading process. There is, however, a lot of value in this part of the book, specially in the later chapters, and the reader is strongly advised to read it. One thing I should say is that, while they detail interesting aspects of reading imaginative literature, their techniques mostly apply to expository works. I think their best advice with respect to the former is “don’t try to resist the effect that a work of imaginative literature has on you”. This means allowing the work to show you “a deeper, or greater reality”. And this reality is “the reality of our inner life”. We don’t need any more rules than this one.The last part of the book presents the fourth (and highest) level of reading — Syntopical reading — or reading two or more books on the same subject. By reading syntopically you are not concerned with understanding each book in all its details — in fact, you won’t read any of the individual books analytically (not at the present syntopical reading effort, at least). Here you are reading each book for what it may contribute to your own problem, not for the book’s own sake. Furthermore, you are not reading to find the truth or to establish your own voice — you would be only one more voice in the conversation. You are simply trying to understand the controversy itself, to establish the many voices you hear in a pure exercise of dialectical objectivity. This is a fantastic topic, which the authors have materialised in their greatest contribution to mankind, in my opinion — the Syntopicon, volumes II and III of the Great Books of the Western World. The reader is very much advised to check it out.The book ends with two appendices. The first one provides a fascinating list of great books — the “endlessly readable” books. The list may seem overwhelming at first glance (and it is!), but the authors are prompt to address the reader and explain that the list does not have any time frame attached to it. I say it should just be begun — even an ignorant reader like me will be so flabbergasted by what he will learn that he will never stop reading it. This is a project for your life as a whole — to never stop reading these books. For a much more restrictive (but also magnificent) reading list, the reader is referred to the 10-year-reading plan provided in Adler’s Great Books. The second appendix provides exercises and tests on all four levels of reading. I must admit that I hadn’t read them until I got this far in my review. I then decided to do it and now I tell you this: just read it. If you have had literature classes as an undergraduate or graduate student, you might find it slightly commonplace. But if you haven’t, like me, you will be glad you read it. Like they state at the beginning of the appendix, the selected texts are "themselves worth reading", so you can’t lose much by doing so. It is a delightful taste of what awaits you in your future exploits of the Great Books — if you do well and accept the challenge, of course. On my part, simply put, this book has changed my life. It not only showed me "how" to read a book, but it also showed me "what" to read. I’ll be forever in debt with two of the greatest absent teachers I’ve had, Dr. Mortimer J. Adler and Dr. Charles Van Doren.

Apart from my school and college, I never spent much time in reading books. I hate reading novels, work of fictions, etc. Also, when i read, I read from first to last, trying to remember what I read and the success of the book is limited by the memory capacity of my brain. But this book, changed that all. The analytical reading method opened my eyes to a whole new world of opportunities. These days, i am purchasing two book every six months. I am love philosophy and psychology. So These expository works are respected by me as a reader as advised in this book. Now after reading a book, I have a little notebook that contains my interpretation of the topics and this gives me a whole new insight and intellect to what was discussed. Every schools and colleges should first teach this to students before recommending papers for sememsters.

The author explains his outlook on four levels of reading: elementary reading, inspectional reading, analytical reading and syntopical reading. The vast majority of people read at an elementary level, if they read at all. Newspapers, magazines are geared to this first level, that of seventh grade. Reading at this level is simple and unsophisticated you just look at every word until you've seen them all.The second level of reading is inspectional where the reader skims, or pre reads the preface, table of contents, index, and a few chapters. You should read the entire book superficially without regard to whether the reader understands it or not, the author explains. The authors believe  that this kind of superficial reading can prepare a reader for enjoying of more substantial books. They also claim, and I found this to be true, that this method should be used for great works first, then go back later for in depth reading for better understanding and enjoyment. I remember reading classics in school slowly and in depth, and like the authors say, you forget the beginning and meaning of the book before you even finish with these great classics. What's worse is you don't enjoy reading them at that point, and it's more drudgery.Adler and Van Doren then present how to classify books, and the approaches to take for each kind. This is a very in depth and thoughtful process that will greatly benefit real readers in multiple capacities.Â

#169,854 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This cookbook is frequently very vague and does not provide adequate instructions. For instance one recipe states "add one can coconut milk." How much coconut milk is that? Six, eight, maybe 16 ounces? Another recipe states "Add one tri tip roast" which will cook for eight hours yet neither the size of roast needed nor is the temperature it should cook is indicated. I may be new to cooking, but I know that the larger the roast, the longer it will take to cook and stating that you should cook it for eight hours is incorrect and a range of times is needed for many reasons. Another recipe calls for the cook to add "one tablespoon of your favorite herbs." If I know what herbs would work well in a recipe I wouldn't need a cook book! Another recipe calls for "0.7 pounds of beef stew meat" and " 0.4 pounds of chopped pumpkin. " How can some recipes be so vague and others so specific? I know that there are many variables when using the crock pot. Things like croc pot size, brand, etc affect cooking times and thus a range is needed. And without specific instructions you could easily wind up with a piece of meat or ingredients that will not fit into your pot. Or you could easily overcook or undercook your meal. Some foods such as pork require cooking in a specific manner or illness could result. None of these variables seem to have been taken into account in this cookbook. Many of the recipes read like someone made them up based on some vague memory of what they saw their grandmother put together when they were a child. The recipes do not state how many people the recipe will feed so how can the person cooking plan appropriately? Also the Book has NO PICTURES! And pictures are in my opinion a very important part of a cook book. Based on these specific issues I cannot recommend this cookbook.

HALF this book is telling about a keto diet...if I’m buying this book, I’ve already done that research. The recipes all seem just run of the mill, absolutely nothing original or even remotely interesting. I could overlook those things but what I can’t ignore is the fact that there is absolutely no nutritional information listed, in a cookbook of this type I would really love to see carbs, calories, fat content, etc listed...without that it is completely useless to me. Oh and the photos on the cover, I can’t seem to find those recipes anywhere in the book! It’s being returned!

This cookbook contains all the recipes with 5 ingredients that are Ketogenic as well. These recipes can be made use of easily in our daily busy lives. The recipes are specialized to cook in the crock-pot which makes them much easier to cook. In this book, the author discusses the details about the ketogenic diet and the specialty of the crock-pot in this cookbook. This book is well written and easy to understand. All instructions are very detailed, easy to follow and helpful. I have tried some recipes of this cookbook and all dishes were great. I'm glad to have this cookbook on my Kindle to use when I need it. I liked this book very much and I highly recommend it for those who want to eat delicious food and to be fit and healthy. Would recomended. Thanks auther

My cookbook arrived yesterday and I already have three things picked out to endeavor. The book is very well indited and all the steps are laid out for you...plus the mouth watering photos peak your interest!! I am delectated with my purchase and cerebrate you will be additionally. Great book for those who want simple facile recipes with just a few ingredients. When I commenced Keto I didn't optate to become a cook! This book avails me keep my life simple.

Love this cookbook and this book is perfect to get you started and the recipes are easy and you'll have delicious meals with very little effort and the recipes are meals that you are familar with and some examples of recipes, pot roast, beef and cabbage, chicken chilli, beef shoulder bbq, chicken in salsa verde, meatballs and spaghetti squash and it also has breakfast, lunch, soups, side dishes, and desserts and not far out and boujee just real food and there are a few recipes that calls for rabbit, oxtail or lamb but I just plan on substituting that with chicken or beef and all recipes really have 5 ingredients only that means you can save more and yet produce delightful and healthy foods for your family. Such a nice cookbook.

This is the perfect guidebook for all. I take this book from Amazon. When I read this book after I really get informative ideas about easy recipes content. I learn many recipes and tasty dishes ideas from this book. Well written via author and thanks for that. Me and my cousin really happy from this guidebook. Helpful !!

The five ingredient keto crock pot cookbook , I have read this cookbook and start following mentioned recipes because this five ingredient keto crock pot recipes suits to my budget and interesting to make an try new taste recipes, do suggest others because its awesome.

Many recipes from this cookbook require you just to dump all the ingredients into the Crock Pot, and then you can leave the machine to do its thing while you spend time with your family, go to work or just sleep. The Author is a real professional in what she does.

Robert Gates is a government executive of renown. He has been effective as Director of the CIA, as national security advisor, as President of Texas A&M and as Secretary of Defense.Harsh words are seldom spoken about Bob Gates’ competence or intellect. In A Passion for Leadership, Gates he gives us a dazzling display of a uniquely American philosophical foundation as a tool for leadership. He can write. This is a very good and valuable book.A Passion for Leadership is a tell-all, a how-to tale that weaves chapter and verse of how to effectively lead and manage vast, complex organizations. It provides the link between convictions and actions in several layers and over time, and Gates did a fabulous job at helping the reader navigate the levels of abstraction, the second and third order effects of seemingly simple solutions to American problems. It goes beyond Duty, his last book, to tell how one takes a foundation of reason and reality based convictions to a series of specific actions in specific circumstances within the amorphous bounds of those convictions.Gates is one of very few legendarily effective government executives. Perhaps the broad performance canvas he earned and inherited allowed him to develop more nuanced leadership skills than others who were constrained by narrower bounds. For example, another of those quietly famous leaders is Admiral James Loy, who rose from the Coast Guard Academy to be Commandant, then the President’s “go-to” guy to manage change in the vastly complex intersection of politics, government and management. Loy built TSA from scratch after the 9/11 disaster changed the way we fly and then built from scratch again as Deputy in the new Department of Homeland Security. Loy managed change well and described in his writings how to do it, step by step. Managing change consumed Loy’s time, but in each job his decisions suffered a layer or two of bureaucracy between him and the President, including those tiresome vetting and approving minions who served the President as staff.Inevitably, even perhaps by design, that extra time for staff approval slowed the execution of Loy’s visions; Gates suffered far less of that. Loy was required to keep his head down to manage complex change in government; Gates was required to look up in his intelligence and national security roles to report and anticipate. In Gates’ career, the confluence of his roles provided deep opportunity to observe behavior and multiple orders of unplanned effects. His observations are delivered with grace and wit. Gates’ background ran from Director of the CIA, to national security advisor, to President of Texas A&M, to Secretary of Defense, and he tells a moving tale of those experiences. Both Loy and Gates write well on leadership, but Gates has been challenged more broadly, so perhaps writes with broader exposure and perspective on the various problems of leadership, albeit with less specificity than Loy’s P to the seventh power (‘proper prior planning prevents piss-poor performance’.) Gates may also have had time to observe Loy’s success and generalize the lessons. It was Gates’ job to watch, learn and confirm. It seems he did those things well, among others.Gates’ leadership canvas broadened when he slipped from one bureaucracy into another, leaving government to become President of Texas A&M University. Gates was charged with leading an effective effort to regain A&M’s academic stature. University politics are legendarily vicious, but the faculty activists there were over matched in the multi-year scrum that followed. Gates provides an executive primer on the utility of building on a foundation of moral principles and values. It’s great theater.Gates’ time after A&M, when he returned to the US government as Secretary of Defense under George W. Bush, is the capstone of both his career and this book. Consider the challenges of being the only cabinet member to serve in the transition from Bush to Obama, from conservative Republican to liberal Democrat, then observe as Gates negotiates those shoals. Again, it is marvelous theater. Gates is a wonderful storyteller who weaves his powerful characters into compelling discussions of the problems of the world. He skillfully posits solutions and resultant actions within those discussions. The word among admired government executives is, “Bob Gates is one of the good guys.” His book certainly reflects that.A Passion for Leadership is a timeless work of leadership and management genius. Read it.Robert E. Cook, author of PulsePulse: The third of the Cooch adventures in national security (The Cooch series of national security thrillers Book 3)

This is not a political book. It is a non academic book about how to eliminate bureaucracy in the private and public sectors. Gates uses his experiences and provides examples from is time leading the Defense Department, CIA, and Texas A&M. His objective was to make transformation changes in all 3 institutions. If you are interested in this topic (which is probably why you are reading this review) than it is worth the read. The things he tried are a good review for leaders who have an "agenda for change".I enjoyed some of the quotes he gave from past leaders and reading about his perspective of critical issues the country faced during his tenures.

Duty was a great book and so is, A Passion For Leadership. The latter should be read after reading John C. Maxwell's , The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. The two books go hand in hand. I wish they had been written when I was 21 instead of 61. Very few young people are exposed to leadership. They see management and do not understand the difference.I worked as a Department of the Army civilian employee for over 36 years. I saw very few people during my entire career that did not put the mission first, IMHO, Mr. Fukuyama is incorrect. During my last four years of service, we followed Colonel Pete Blaber's philosophy, " The Mission, The Men and Me".Robert Gates would make an extremely good President, much better than the current candidates on either side of the table.

Robert Gates led three unique organizations- a spy agency, a major university, and an outfit running two wars. With no formal leadership training except for the Boy Scouts, Gates was apparently successful and he offers his perspectives and advice on transformative leadership with keen insights and the right touch of humor.

He is right, this country needs more leaders who will step up and lead the way. If higher management and mid level management at my company read this book and applied some of the principles from Mr. Gates, my company would be stronger in the leadership category. I have learned a lot by just observing managers. They have taught me what not to do. I learned a lot from this book, many years of experience passed down to help a younger man like myself, thank you! There was some large words in this book. Not a bad thing since kindle has built in dictionary. All in all I have lots of highlights. This book has also given me the interest in reading about past passed presidents.I recommend this book.

There is lots to consider in this book from someone who really knows what they're talking about. This isn't just some academic levitation, but rather an experienced, hardheaded, patriotic leader who gives us lots of good insight into management and leadership. I'm glad he mentions the late John Gardner as one of his inspirations. Mine too.I wish there had been many more stories because they are so effective. I would also say that the editors no doubt inserted "she" in many paragraphs to show that leaders are both male and female. I found this terribly distracting and stupid editing. The obvious point can be made without shifting gender every few paragraphs from time to time.

Nice overview of leadership qualities from the perspective of a person with varied experience in top leadership positions. Focuses on instituting major changes with buy ins from existing staff (my terminology). Did find his alternation of gender (sex) between male female to identify leaders a bit annoying. Could have just said "person" to be politically correct. Heard an interview on PBS where is was critical of President Obama but didn't address that on the book; maybe because of the award that was bestowed by the aforementioned president. He did mention other leaders including past presidents attributes and faults. Some of what he stated was just common sense; at least to me.
