I was kind of disappointed. I know and use many of the techniques, but there were several I was hoping to get additional information on. For those techniques I'm familiar with, I can honestly say that it's very light in technique, with only a broad overall view of what should be done. Don't expect any explanation of why you're using a specific tool, any kind of troubleshooting guidance, and unless you have a background in the techniques already, this book is only an introduction. It's on the level of Tim McCreight's original book on jewelry making.It does have very nice illustration, some serious eye candy, and it has a great section on stones. The stones section gives you the basic properties of the stones, what you should be aware of when setting or cleaning them, trouble areas or treatments that will affect its use in jewelry. The stones section is a very nice compilation.If you want serious instruction in stone setting, try John Cogswell's book on stonesetting , or Blaine Lewis' videos. Both of those are excellent. There may be others that I haven't come across yet, but those two are pretty sure bets.This will work OK if you're a teacher and you want to use this as a reference, but if your students are relying on this alone to learn stonesetting, expect a lot of frustration and ill set stones.UPDATE:In addition to the two mentioned above, Gemstone Settings by Anastasia Young is another that is good, with tips that help you to succeed in doing a new style of setting.

First there are pretty pictures in the gallery showing a variety of nice applications of gem-setting in each category.Second, there are very good and clear illustrations of step by step basic processes with simple explanations.There is enough info for me to start trying every type of setting but probably not enough for me to master any 1 setting type.My roommate, who has been doing jewelry for years thinks it is not enough depth for an experienced hobbyist or jeweler to gain greater knowledge, he doesn't think it is specific enough to add an edge to the knowledge of someone with experience in setting, but thinks it is great for a beginner, like me, to get the gist of how each one of these kinds of settings are done step by step. I'm a beginner at gem setting and intermediate at most other jewelry. I have read 3/4 of the book so far. It has thus far solidified what my teacher has taught me because of it's clear explanations and because it clearly breaks down each type..even clarifying between pave and micro pave processes.

I have a collection of books on Stonesetting and from each one I learn something.Melissa Hunt's book is very beautiful and has great photos. I really like the format of lots of ways of setting stones, often offering different ways of doing things. She doesn't leave out "critical steps" like some books do and gives some great, very specific information.I especially liked when she detailed the "set up" part of making prongs - giving a few ways to position the metal using different blocks and tools. I've learned that set-up is half the battle in lots of things.Another favorite part is the "Pro Tip" on the sideline of each type of setting - these little bit of information are the sort of things that really help and that those of us not in a classroom setting miss out on.So, all in all really a great resource, I recommend this book!

Great book. Got it as a gift and the recipient was really pleased and impressed. Took a bit of doing as first seller took the money and ran. Very popular book--especially at the price--but finally found it again and all went well. However, Amazon does a very poor job of helping you if you get burned.

Although this book is well produced and beautifully photographed, I'm not sure I can recommend it. The metal smithed setting techniques are very basic and not a lot of intensive step by step information is given, but perhaps Miss Hunt was trying to put a lot of information and a wide overview in a single book. If taken as an outline, it *is* very comprehensive. The chapter on metal clay however was obviously written by someone who has almost no experience with metal clay. Both "PMC" and "Art Clay Silver" are brand names for the powder metalurgy cousin material known generically as "metal clay". Comparing the two as she does in the first sentence of the chapter is like saying "Tiffany" also known as "Cartier". Two entirely different branded entities for a generic jewelry store. In addition, setting a metal bezel or prong setting into a raw metal clay design and then firing is an often problematic technique. If you are interested in metal clay there are dozens of books written by very experienced artists. I'll be sending this book back.

Ms. Hunt is an accomplished jewelry maker and her skills are detailed in this work. Wonderful beside the Evening Chair for brousing or in the workroom where you can use it a guide for so many application in doing your stone settings. I love it!

There are nights in which I look at the moon and can scarcely believe what we achieved by going there in the 1960s. The voyages of Apollo were an astounding technological and human achievement. In "Amazing Stories of the Space Age," I have sought to not only recapture some of those incredible feats of the space age, but to also detail some of the plans that were never carried out, but were eminently doable given healthy doses of daring and funding. There were other projects that would likely have resulted in failure, as they were outlandish given what we know today. But many would have been glorious had they been undertaken-and successful. The space age was an era of boundless optimism, bold thinking and boundless innovation. It is my fondest hope that by revisiting this era we can capture some of that bold thinking and apply it to the adventures we are about to embark upon in the new space age we are entering today.

This book was reviewed in Smithsonian's Air And Space Magazine, with a very good review. I am glad that I purchased it. I would have given it another star if it had been longer. At 68 (and having followed the space program since I was 8 years old) I know a little bit about many of these stories. However, Mr. Pyle gives a great deal of additional details that make them fascinating. To many, it is absurd to consider that our military actually considered a rocket propelled by nuclear bombs. We're not talking about bombs exploding in deep space (this is still being considered in the future.) As Mr. Pyle notes, this is from liftoff on earth. No one stopped to consider the radiation hazards of such a rocket. Once they did, the program was shelved. There are other examples of ideas that are amazing, some which actually worked - at least in some form, and often years later. If you are interested in the Space Age, this book is truly fascinating.

"...Nazis in Orbit..." provides an "inside baseball" view of mainstream missions readers have heard of and missions and space hardware which are more obscure. An informitive and entertaining read.

Very interesting recount of the development of rockets starting before Von Braun. I recall the rivalry of the services and NASA to get launch and orbiting hardware designed and online...was unaware of some programs like Blue Gemini. Great read..

A fun and informative book. A few of the stories aren't so "amazing" but it's still an interesting read.
