#11,687 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I chose this book because Kristen Hannah blew my freaking MIND in The Nightingale. That book had me crying and laughing and swooning and just made my life.Home Front was so completely different, I don't even believe that it's the same author. It was SO predictable...and that's coming from someone who loves Dan Brown. There was lots of dead-horse-beating and a very unrealistic stigma throughout the whole book. I KNOW I can't speak for everyone, but I refuse to believe that in this day and age, a child would be ashamed of their mother in the military. Not a spoiler, just a very common thread of the book and I was totally over it after it was mentioned the first ten times. I think the story had potential, and I will not lie - I did cry. It struck some heartstrings in there but by no means was I knocked off my feet like in The Nightingale. The story wasn't awful, but I genuinely would not recommend. It will work for some people and it will really resonate with some people, but in general, as a 25 year old female who's partner is an OIF veteran, I just couldn't get on board with some of the characters' ignorance and it just felt really forced. I really just finished it because I have a hard time abandoning half-read books - which I'm glad I did because the ending is not disappointing. So far Kristin Hannah is 50:50 with me and eventually I'll try another book and hopefully love it as much as The Nightingale!!!

It's been a while since I started reading a book I just did not want to put down. The last was probably The Nightingale. The story sucked me in, and I just wanted to read until the last page. I felt very important issues were touched on in this book. That said, I cannot believe I liked a book so much and at the same time, disliked so many characters. The husband was a jerk through more than half of the book. The (almost) teenage daughter was a total brat. And the main character was very unrealistic in her life views for half the book. But.....I suppose those elements are what made the story so good.A few things bothered me....I would love to know the answers to all these, not that I ever will.First, what did they do with the kids once weekend a month and 2 weeks each summer? The kids and husband acted like the mom never spent 5 minutes away from any of them.Secondly, when she started drinking wine every day, why didn't the husband just get rid of it all? It's not like she was going to get to the store to buy more! And third, why did it take so long for the husband to get her the help that she needed? You don't have to be Freud to know she needed help badly.I would definitely recommend this book to friends.

I was excited to read this book following Nightinangle by the same author. Especially since I am married to a career soldier who served 30+ years. I have been around everything you can imagine to include watching our wounded soldiers come from the battle field in Landstuhl Germany. We have friends missing both hands and legs, parts of an arm or even part of their face. We know many who truly have PTSD and battle it daily. This book left me saying this is complete BS and half way through I struggled to even want to finish. And through all my years of life within the military I have never seen anyone have this lack of support for their soldier. Ms Hannah has no military experiences and sought help from people who served but I am surprised they could have led her to this direction of what military life is like. Through the entire book I kept saying to myself....this author is completely writing out of her knowledge and experience and there is a clear disconnect. And it is clear she has agenda to bash military life and not paint it in the positive that it can be. I do not plan to recommend this book nor share my book. It is going into the trash.

Wow. This book just blew me away. As a mother and former soldier in the Army Reserve, married to an Infantry solider who deployed to Afghanistan, this story hit close to home. The passion for the job, the bonds you make with your fellow soldiers, the sacrifices, the pre-deployment emotions, the heartbreaks, the reality of homecoming....Hannah did an incredible job conveying all the ups and downs in a Military family. It felt so REAL. We were also both stationed at Ft. Lewis in Washington so I knew the setting of the book exactly and it felt real and believable. The author did an amazing job with her research for this book, I really enjoyed the author's notes and interview with a female black hawk pilot at the back of the book.I also spent some time working with wounded Veterans at Walter Reed and Hannah's description of recovery and PTSD was heartbreakingly accurate. We have Veteran friends dealing with many different kinds of injuries, some physical, some mental, and we've even lost friends to Veteran suicide. This is such an important story for the American people to know and understand and Hannah does a beautiful job conveying this without over-doing it. However, I would like to add that Jo would have had more support from the Army (doctors, physical therapy, psychiatrists, psychologists) after coming home.I loved that this story was from a female soldier's perspective. Many women have fought and died in combat even though they were not (during the time this book was written) allowed in combat positions. Being a female soldier in an Army of men can be tough, and I do wish Hannah had developed this issue a little bit more. The use of "Fly girl" and "Soldier girl" didn't sit well with me. They both seemed a bit overused and too dramatic for my taste.Overall I absolutely loved this book and have not stopped thinking about it. I have only cried reading 2 books in my life and they both happen to be by Kristin Hannah: this one and The Nightingale. She manages to convey real human emotion so well, I only hope that the scheduled movies for these two books can do the same!

Well, it's alright if you like being forced to read books for school. However, after you get through the first initial chapters and learn their "ROPE" system, you get the point. It becomes really repetitive with very little more information other than the case studies it uses and examples.

Got this used, barely used it for my class. Good book but need more graphics.

Interesting read if studying PR

Really great book for PR courses. Just wish it wasn't so expensive!

:)

Great information about public relations campaigns

As described

I use this text to teach public relations and have found it easy to organize the class around the book. My students have complained that they want more crisis cases, the structure of the book is repetitive, the thing costs too much, etc. I would criticize because it obviously has a good deal of information missing from the cases (Deepwater Horizon was particularly weak). Instead, I used the missing information as starting points for lengthier discussions on everything from quantitative measurement, sampling, and statistical methods to finding ways to build messages that resonate with target audiences. Keeping the cases short also has the added advantage of not overwhelming the students while giving them enough information to work with. Sure, this text isn't perfect but it does a really good job of beating PR principles and processes into the reader and providing some excellent jumping-off points for discussion and deeper exploration of the cases and the processes.I will happily continue to use this text but I hope the price can come down at some point.

Great Race, The (Chinese Legends Trilogy), by David Bouchard

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-4?Ancient Chinese astronomers devised a zodiac based on a repeating 12-year cycle, with each year named for an animal. There are varying explanations for why it begins with the Year of the Rat and continues through ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, and the rest, ending with the Year of the Pig. This atypical variant, for which no source is given, is presented as a tale told in formal, adjectival language by an elderly Chinese woman to her small granddaughter. Events unfold at a leisurely pace as the 12 animals participate in a race across a desert, a forest, a mountain range, and a sea. The race is set in motion by the Great Buddha, and its destination is the utopian Jade City. The story departs from more familiar versions by celebrating friendship, cooperation, and self-sacrifice among the animals who finish the race behind the conniving rat. The lengthy text is overshadowed by the art, painted in rich colors on a grand scale. Huang's illustrations resemble oil paintings by old masters?Turner and Rubens come to mind?and seem to belong in a gilded frame on the wall of an art gallery rather than on the pages of a picture book. An explanation of the Chinese zodiac and a description of the characteristics of each animal sign are appended. This production is more suited to a coffee table than a storyhour; Ed Young's Cat and Rat (Holt, 1995) remains the best all-around version of the story.?Margaret A. Chang, North Adams State College, Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Gr. 3^-6. Although the true origins of the Chinese zodiac remain a mystery, this lovely book presents one of the fables associated with its creation. Here, a grandmother teaches her young granddaughter the importance of the order of the animals in the zodiac and how the order came to be determined--through a great race. As the story unfolds, it is clear that there are more important qualities and personal attributes than speed or cleverness as the animals compete for place. Lavishly and beautifully illustrated, the picture-book format serves the story well, giving visual form to the sometimes difficult concepts of friendship, loyalty, and ethical behavior. This well-told fable is not only an interesting story but also a fine introduction to the Chinese zodiac; included are explanations of the zodiac and each of the 12 animals' characteristics and symbolism. Love the book, beautiful illustrations and wonderful story. I have the other two books in the trilogy (also outstanding) and was able to purchase them brand new, but not this book. My seller posted it as a former library book in "good" condition. It came with blacked out stickers on the front cover and several pages ripped near the back. Just not what I would classify as good condition. I guess I'll have to wait for another copy to come up and re-buy it then.

Fabulous story, this book needs to be put back into print.

the illustrations are lovely, but this version of the story is significantly different from other re-tellings of this race.

A wonderful book with great drawings. Very colorfull and well binded. Containsa few great Chinese legends in English. Great for children and adults!

Diary of Bergen-Belsen: 1944-1945

Review

“In March 1945, the final month before liberation, nearly 20,000 prisoners died there. Lévy-Hass described this form of genocide in her diary: “the slow, vile, calculated destruction by hunger, violence, terror, and deliberately sustained epidemics”. Her rare description of the final months of the Holocaust is marked by political consciousness, moral understanding, and perceptive observation. Lévy-Hass has much to tell us of death and survival.”—Steve Hochstadt, historian, Illinois College; author, Sources of the Holocaust"A compelling document of historic importance which shows, with remarkable composure, that ethical thought about what it means to be human can be sustained in the most inhuman conditions. Hanna Lévy-Hass teaches us how a politics of compassion and justice can rise out of the camps as the strongest answer to the horrors of the twentieth century."—Jacqueline Rose, historian, Queen Mary University of London; author, The Question of Zion“There are many testimonies of the Nazi concentration and extermination camps, but very few have the quality and the strength of this diary from Bergen-Belsen by Hanna Lévy-Hass. A Jew and a member of the Resistance, Lévy-Hass belongs to the group of detainees that—as Primo Levi emphasized in The Drown and the Saved—had the resources to preserve their humanity against the planned annihilation by the Nazi machine.... The history of the Holocaust is often reduced to a simple conflict between the persecutors and their victims, but it was a much more complex process. This is another book I was sure I had reviewed but hadn't!While some people propagate the idea that the best survived the camps, the fact is that to survive many stole food from the weaker. I'm not interested in judging them; this is what capitalist society in general teaches people to begin with, and that's true even in the best of circumstances. It's generally magnified under the worst of circumstances. So this is a remarkable story about a woman whose socialist beliefs and activism helped enable her to play a big role in organizing collective survival. Modern socialists are not utopians--we don't try to organize little communes where we can have "socialism" in a hostile capitalist world. You can't even complete the road to socialism in a single country, contrary to Stalin (see The Revolution Betrayed. But we do try to lead by example, and that's what Hanna Levy-Hass did! That's what Cuba does when it sends internationalist doctors around the world. They make a difference, but they can't be everywhere. They can set an example, and show what is possible. For a Marxist view on Utopianism (which Marx and Engels studied and learned from), see both The Communist Manifesto 3rd (third) Edition by Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels published by Pathfinder Pr (2008) Paperback and Socialism: Utopian and Scientific. While the Jewish question has been present in Marxism from before the Communist Manifesto, the most serious study is The Jewish Question: A Marxist Interpretation by Abram Leon (1971-06-01). (Don't pay $35.00 for it, it's a $25.00 book and in print). Abram Leon traces the reasons for Jewish survival and for anti-Semitism giving a materialist, not a religious answer. Leon died in Aushwitz, and his comrade Ernest Mandel wrote in a biographical note to the book (which is closer to the norm than the story related by Levy-Hass):"Leon was the type least able to withstand the regime of Nazi concentration camps. He possessed a sense of human dignity which found intolerable contact with the degradation and cruelty which became the common denominator of human conduct inside the concentration camps. The nobility of his character was shattered against the implacable bestiality of desperate egoism, just as his body became broken by physical exertions to which it was not accustomed and by malignant disease. After several weeks of labor in a road-building gang, he was sent to a quarantine camp. There one had to devise tricks, grovel before the masters, engage in petty trading, and steal in order to survive. He could not rise above his companions in misery along these lines. Chained to his miserable cot, he passed his last days in reading and meditation. He was certain that the end was near. There came the final 'medical inspection.' The sick destined for the gas chambers were selected. He was among them."Also useful is On the Jewish Question by Leon Trotsky (1970-01-01).For Israel, I recommend Israel: A Colonial-Settler State?, although I think people who try to treat Israel as if it was still a colonial-settler state are off base. It hasn't escaped its past, any more than the US has escaped the legacy of slavery and genocide against the Indians, but it has become a more or less "normal" capitalist country. I'm of course for seeing a Palestinian state come into being, but does anyone think that the reactionary Hamas, and the bureaucratic Fatah (of today) can lead this? When the Palestinians had, despite limitations, revolutionary leadership, they fought like shown in this small book: Palestine and the Arabs' Fight for Liberation. To see their decline amidst the first Gulf War, I recommend New International no. 7: Opening Guns of World War III: Washington's Assault on Iraq. The only way forward to a Palestinian state is solidarity based on common class interests.

Five stars to Haymarket Books for republishing Hanna Levy-Hass's diary in a better translation than the first English edition (1982). Minus one star for republishing it without the author's thirty-nine page interview by Eike Geisel in Vielleicht war das alles erst der Anfang: Tagebuch aus d. KZ Bergen-Belsen 1944-1945 (Rotbuch ; 191) (German Edition). Since Levy-Hass left us so little in writing, it is difficult to understand this omission. Amira Hass dedicated this new edition to Eike Geisel. Did Haymarket Books think his 1978 interview of the author was outdated?

A long too-thought-out memoir that could never have been written in a KL. While she's starving to death, she has somehow managed to write copious paragraphs in a journal--a death sentence infraction. Where was the paper from? the pen/pencil? The hiding place for a few hundred pieces of paper. Please!!

this is the most scholarly work I've read regarding the concentration camps of the Nazis. it has been a great experience for me. To escape the usual grammar and vocabulary of one of the inmates. i'e often wondered if there were attempts to educate the children, organize any kind of resistance to the needless brutality, learn how starvation "really" affected the mind, etc.must recommend the excellent read to anyone interested in the subject.

Levy-Haas gives us a close, intimate look at hell and how she survived it, definitely not unscathed. Unlike other Holocaust memoirs, we get a look at her life afterwards, and the sad disillusionment of her experience upon returning to Yugoslavia and her sojourns in Israel and the U.S. The acompanying analyses by daughter and others are illuminating. A valuable, memorable book.

I liked reading the real story!!

Interesting to read that the Bergen-Belsen inmates were wolves to each other and had more to fear of them (inmates and kapos) than of the SS-guards. She must have been a very special woman: communist activist for a major part of her life, anti-zionist, internationalist and peace-activist.

I'm sorry this diary was ignored by the public for so long, for it's one of the very few diaries to come out of a concentration camp. Its author was a very educated, intelligent woman who spoke several languages and certainly knew how to write. I'm amazed that, starving and sick in Bergen-Belsen with people dying all around her, Hanna Levy-Hass was able to teach the children, write these amazingly detailed diary entries, and even have philosophical conversations with others about the nature of ethics in a concentration camp.At one point she writes, "Our existence has something cruel, beastly about it. Everything human is reduced to zero [...] We have not died, but we are dead."The reader should be aware that the introduction and afterword take up 70 pages of this slim book. Hanna Levy-Hass's daughter is a journalist in Israel and a Palestinian rights activist, and she writes about her mother's pre-war background and post-war wanderings, as well as her own experiences as a child of two Holocaust survivors. The introduction provides helpful biographical information, but the afterword, though beautifully written, can be skipped over entirely.
