Review

“It’s absolutely gosh-wow, super-colossal—smart, funny, and a continual pleasure to read.”—The Washington Post Book World   “The depth of Chabon’s thought, his sharp language, his inventiveness, and his ambition make this a novel of towering achievement.”—The New York Times Book Review   “I’m not sure what the exact definition of a ‘great American novel’ is, but I’m pretty sure that Michael Chabon’s sprawling, idiosyncratic, and wrenching new book is one.”—New York   “The themes are masterfully explored, leaving the book’s sense of humor intact and characters so tightly developed they could walk off the page.”—Newsweek   “A page-turner in the most expansive sense of the word: its gripping plot pushes readers forward. . . . Chabon is a reader’s writer, with sentences so cozy they’ll wrap you up and kiss you goodnight.”—Chicago Tribune

With "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay", Michael Chabon weaves an epic story about the immigrant experience in American before, during and after the second World War, viewed through the lens of an industry that was largely pioneered by Jewish New Yorkers who had come to the U.S. from Europe: comic books. The tale of Sammy Clay and his cousin, Josef Kavalier, who has just managed to escape Nazi-occupied Prague, is one of boot-strapping success, but also one of tragedy, repression, lost love, and broken hearts. It is, however, in the end, about redemption, being true to one's self, and second chances.Chabon writes with his usual inimitable style, creating a unique vision of mid-century New York City, populated with fantastic characters almost as big as the larger-than-life four-color heroes and heroines they create. We see Sammy's greatest dreams realized, his hopes for true love crushed, the precarious balance he finds in later years, and finally, his one last attempt at self-reinvention in a life characterized by little else. We watch Joe escape the clutches of true evil, but agonize when he loses nearly everything, until he slowly reconstructs himself as the man he has always wanted to be. And we see the two cousins, lives intertwined inexorably, support each other, help each other, and ultimately, act as the source of the other's salvation. There are few writers of Chabon's talent and skill working today, and "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay" is one of his best.

This book helped me through a very tough time in my life.It was so beautiful and adventurous and human and sad and happy and wondrous that, over the course of a month, it lifted me out of the darkness. I rationed it to one chapter a day, which I read on the subway on my way to the office. I looked so forward to it. It's one of those books I found myself thinking about when I wasn't reading it, counting the hours until my special half hour on the subway.I feel like the subject matter mentioned out of context might turn some people off (mostly women): it centralizes around the two jewish boys who created the comic book "The Escapist" (a metaphor for the "Superman" comic) in bustling New York City during and after World War II, a time when America needed a hero. I promise you, though, the characters, the tone, the locations and the deeply human undertones transcend the book's logline. It's really about love, religion, overcoming deep adversity (including nazis, heartbreak and profound loss), loyalty, friendship, death-defying escape acts and edge-of-your-seat excitement and adventure. The word "wondrous" really does capture the feeling the book left me with - a sense of childlike wonder and heart rending emotion simultaneously. It captures the excitement of the time so well that it made me feel I was part of something larger, just by reading it.I hope you'll treat yourself to this (pulitzer winning) epic of human proportions. Regardless of your sex, religion, race or creed, this book has something amazing to give you. It has stuck with me for over ten years and I can't wait to read it again.

To be honest, I struggled through some of the beginning, but am so glad I stuck with it. There is so much in this book about human nature, cruelty, friendship, love, & forgiveness. I read and savored it over time, as I did The Goldfinch or All the Light We Cannot See. As a comic lover whose mother bought her a comic book every trip to the grocery store (& I still have them), I loved how comics and their creation were woven into the fabric of this story. I will be re-reading mine again, looking at their construction with fresh eyes.

This story begins in 1939 in New York City. Sammy Klayman lives as an only child to a single mother, and one day his cousin from Europe - Joe Kavalier shows up at their doorstop after escaping his war torn country. He is alone and scared, and Sammy does not like that this kid is not a member of his household. Quickly, though, Sammy discovers that Joe can draw. Sammy starts to share his love of comic books, and soon he and Joe are working together making their own comic book series. They come up with their hero - the Escapist - based on Joe's past of being able to escape like Houdini. Their comics soon become extremely popular. They have their own series, their own toys, their own radio show. Joe stashes all of the money he makes away so that one day he can bring his entire family to America.Tragedy strikes, and Joe runs away. For 11 years, Sammy and Joe's girl - Rosa - search for him to no avail. It isn't until Rosa's son, Thomas, starts to disappear into New York City, skipping school, to visit a mysterious man at a local magic shop. Soon Joe is back in their lives and everything changes for he and Sammy. This book was.....okay. First of all - it was way too long. Very wordy. I found myself skimming sometimes just because there wasn't a lot of dialogue and too much explanation. It is a writing style - I get it - it just isn't for me. Second of all - I did not like Joe. His character was frustrating and extreme. There was a fairly good size chunk of this book during the part that Joe is absent that I felt could have been eliminated all together. Or at least shortened. It completely derailed the story, and didn't fit. The beginning, though, and the ending, when Sammy and Joe were together - was entertaining. Sammy is a witty character and had some great lines. He kept the story afloat and moving forward, unlike Joe's character. This book is definitely for folks who love comic books. They talk quite a bit about the comic book greats throughout this book and mix true history into the story of these fictional writers. My husband - who is a total nerd for these types of stories - is going to read it next so I will be anxious to hear his take on it.

#4,502 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This book started off pretty good but then dragged when Hayden kept making Adalyn wait before taking their relationship to the next level. The first sex scene between these two was quite a ways in. It started off sweet as he had sweet intentions to get to know her better but after awhile it was just frustrating. Then what really took the book down even more was making this a love triangle between Adalyn and a nursing school friend Logan. Logan and Adalyn were great friends who have sex once then he tells her it was a mistake and that’s that. She’s broken hearted but they end up moving on as friends. She then proceeds to get knocked up by Hayden when she skips several birth control pills because that’s normal for a woman whose a nurse. Hayden who is a hockey player gets traded and he asks her to come but instead she says no AND keeps the baby news to herself.Hayden eventually finds out about the baby and starts fighting for her at this point because he loves her. Adalyn moves to LA so Hayden can be the dad he wants to be. We then get dear friend Logan who not only moves to LA to be with Adalyn and moves in with her but he decides to confess his love for her. Does she say “I’m sorry but I’m in love with my baby daddy.”? Nope! From this point it’s her inner dialogue of confusion between the guys and her lying to and playing each of them.If you want sweet fun romance this isn’t for you. This was just a hot mess of a heroine who had no idea what she was doing or what she wanted. So disappointed.

This review pains me to write because I adored many other books by Meghan Quinn especially Three Blind Dates and Wedding Crashers and gave those books 4 and 5 stars. I really liked the beginning of One Baby Daddy and how Adalyn and Hayden met. I liked their banter and how she treated him like a normal person rather than a professional hot hockey star. I admired her profession working as a nurse and her natural wit. Hayden possessed all of the qualities I admire in a man. He was talented, honest, genuine, funny, caring, dedicated, respectful, not a player, a family man, patient, complimentary, and very thoughtful. He was the full package! He was a keeper, and spoiler alert… Adalyn just tossed him aside. For the first half of the book, she was very interested getting to know him and they spent all of their free time together. He even took her on a fun work trip where he had to do a photo shoot and they had an amazing time. Hayden proved over and over how much he cared about her by asking her to wait before they became intimate because he wanted to get to know her first. Their chemistry and physical connection was amazing, but the moment he received the news that he was transferred to California to another hockey team, she dropped him and became cold and distant. She wouldn’t even speak to him and just dismissed him as if their time together didn’t matter. He was confused and heartbroken as was I as the reader. After her complete 180, I no longer wanted them together. I felt he could do much better than to be with someone who refused to communicate with him, especially with the news that he was going to be a father. She did move to California to be near Hayden once he found out she was pregnant, but pretty much ignored him and allowed her male friend, Logan, someone she had slept with in the past, to move in with her knowing it would hurt Hayden. Adalyn claims she was confused as she was never in a relationship before, yet she had no trouble talking to Logan who obviously was interested in much more than being her friend.Adalyn’s main reason for not wanting to be with him was bogus. She claimed she couldn’t be with him because of the distance of where they both lived and amount of time he would be away working. Well, she knew from the moment she met him he played hockey professionally and the team traveled for away games. She also knew he would have time off because when she met him it was their off season. She also knew he would be home after practice and home games. Another reason I didn't buy her excuse is because she was from NY and he played for Philadelphia which is still three states apart and that was ok, but as soon as he was transferred to CA, it was no longer ok. He told her how he felt about her, asked her to go with him and she flat out refused. I understand that it’s hard to leave your friends and family, but since she didn’t go when he asked, I didn’t feel she loved him. What if he were in the military, or an obstetrician or a police officer getting calls all hours of the night to report to work. There are many professions that take people away from their families but you work it out if you love them. This is the part I have trouble with and thus the two stars. I have to admire and respect the heroine to rate it higher and I didn’t after how she treated him. I have to want the hero and heroine to be together, and I didn't reading One Baby Daddy, because he deserved better.

One Baby Daddy (Dating by Numbers #3) by Meghan Quinn5 stars!!!“Damn the d*ck. Damn all the d*cks.”One Baby Daddy is my favourite of this series and Meghan Quinn really delivered on the heart and emotion of this book. I had quite a few tears as I gobbled this story up as my heart was so invested in this couple and the hope that despite their differences they could make a go of it. Meghan Quinn did not disappoint, Hayden Holmes was perfect in Three Blind Dates, but she blew him out the water in this book. I am sure he will be the top of many a book boyfriend list and many hearts will be swooning as his story is finally told.“If I never get to win back your heart again, at least I’ll have a piece of it in the child we share.”Hayden Holmes was our ice hockey player that went on a date with Noely but was still wrapped up in the woman that had left him behind. Hayden was pure, absolute perfection, there was nothing I didn’t love about him. He was kind, compassionate, considerate, generous and he took love seriously. He treasured his heart and didn’t give it away freely. He wanted to make sure he was making the right decisions, he wanted a relationship based on similarities, personality and connection, not what connected between the sheets. I adored this about him and he certainly goes against the grain of traditional hockey romances that grace our kindles.Adalyn was a little harder to love by the end of the book, but I did understand her misguided reasons and for those that hate “miscommunication” she may end up being a character you will begin to hate. However, I understood why and gave her the benefit of the doubt, knowing that the considerate person that she is would come to the top eventually. While some of her choices annoyed me, I knew that Meghan wouldn’t let me down in turning her character around, and she didn’t.“Don’t say anything, I don’t need an answer. I need a chance.”But what this book does bring to the table is a lot of love, a few tears and a lot of emotion. Meghan Quinn tugged at every heart string with this book in parts and had me laughing out loud in others. That is what I adore about this author, she constantly delivers a well-balanced book and places little comedic moments with perfect timing. I loved the banter, I loved the dialogue, I loved the secondary characters whom most we have all met before. The camaraderie and the friendships play a huge part in this book and the message that it represented was incredibly well received.“You’re the man I want but can’t have. The man I need to stay as far away from as possible, because there is no doubt in my mind, you’re the man who can break me, and with a baby on the way, I can’t be broken. I need to be strong.”One again, Meghan Quinn has written a winner in my book and despite our shaky heroine it represented real feelings, real knee jerk reactions and real fears. I loved this book and didn’t want to leave this couple and their friends behind. Loved it!!
