Meants to carry but one thousand one hundred passengers, the ship is over capacity at close to two thousand souls including the crew.Author Marius Gabriel fleshes out his characters by peeling off their layers in a deliberate fashion. Almost no one is what they appear to be on the surface. Even Captain Randall, known for his daring rescues, must risk everything on this his last pre-retirement voyage. Only a bold move on his part can save the ship and its passengers. Will it work?The Ocean Liner is a riveting story that will keep you turning the pages well into the night. You'll feel as though the characters are old friends before long and you'll find yourself wandering the passageways of the SS Manhattan and waiting in the lines of Ellis Island. I also enjoyed the manner in which the author follows his characters once they are on American soil. I like a story that provides closure and this story does that. A very enjoyable addition to this author's stable of work.
If this book had an editor, he or she should be shot. There were unbelievable errors (Joseph Kennedy, Sr. was never a US senator, for example.) There were multiple neologisms, when perfectly good English words existed. Much of the Rosemary Kennedy background isn't supported by recent biographies and histories, and the type of lobotomy that she underwent was more akin to the "Ice Pick" type of procedure which pushed a sharp, pointed surgical pick through the nasal sinuses. Once in place, the surgeon twisted it around, destroying frontal lobe tissue blindly. I have not heard of patients giving feedback during the surgery.And yet, the plot keeps you engaged. I just wonder how Mr. Gabriel got published and who his publisher is. I've got a few manuscripts I would love to show them...
I really enjoyed this book. I love sea stories and at first thought that’s why this would be. It is not. It is a story about people and motivation and loyalty or lack thereof. It starts off as a story of escape. Jews leaving Germany and Europe as Hitler is rising. But the combination of the characters in the SS Manhattan contrasted with the atmosphere on U-113 makes for a thrilling adventure, but it also creates interesting studies of character.
A bit of a disappointment, to be honest. Famous real life people rubbing shoulders with the great unwashed. It all felt a bit forced - I mean suddenly Liz Taylor as a child appears in the book for a few pages but then vanishes. The ending too I felt was inconclusive but that will happen if the story jumps around as this does from character to character. I was left wondering who this book is about ? Is it Rosemary Kennedy ? Is it the German U boat sailor Hufnagel ? Igor Stravinsky ? Rachel ? Thomas ? Unfortunately the cast is so diverse that none of the people in it really tie the story line down. Not one of Mr Gabriel's best.
To be hated, disrespected because of ethnicity or disability remains the greatest tragedy. This book reminds us of so many who suffered the ethnic cleansing, religious abatement and lesser qualified humans in the eyes of Hitler and his Nazis, who lost their lives during WWII. The sacrifices families made to see their children to safety. The anguish in not turning around for fear of giving away a hiding place. The antisemitic throes of those US citizens who refused to acknowledge genocide. The shear will to overcome. To move on. To create a new life in a foreign land. A very humbling read. Would I have the courage, the wherewithal to make a new life? This book leaves you with the haunting history of lives forever entwined because of a shared voyage, their last chance of survival.
While fiction, this is a wonderful retelling of a US-owned ocean liner making the crossing from France and England to the US prior to our entry into World War II. There were a number of celebrities on this crossing (Stravinsky, Toscanini, the Kennedy Famlly --minus Joseph Kennedy, the US Ambassador to England at the time. The overcrowded ship also includes many people fleeing the war for new lives overseas. Well written and "difficult to put down." I read it from start to finish in one session! Highly recommended!
Very enjoyable historical fiction with enough reality to keep the story interesting. The characters and their behaviors added to the theme of the times. Appreciated closure at the end.
Maurius Gabriel writes with such poignancy and crisp depth. I love his novels as he weaves real events and people with an imagined closer look at how people might have felt and behaved. Looking forward to the next one.
