Let me start off by saying this is one of my favorite books on chassis tuning and dynamics. This book uses simple diagrams and explanations to explain why a vehicle does what it does when pushed to the limit. The equations used can be navigated with Highschool math excluding upper level math like Calculous which is required for books like "Race Car Vehicle Dynamics". This book is essential for not only learning the elementary principles of vehicle dynamics but also the science/physics that goes along with it. This book is for tuners. This is not really meant for the person looking to build a car though it does have information to help influence your decision making in that process. If you are an engineer looking to build a race chassis then Race Car Vehicle Dynamics is probably more well suited for your needs though it is a College level text so don't say I didn't warn you. I do a lot of simulation driving and knowing how to tune a chassis is essential to being competitive just like it is in the real world. Chapter 3 for example goes over Weight, Mass Load and Load Transfer and Carroll helps you to understand the relationship of weight vs engine TQ and traction vs engine TQ. His conclusions help you to understand what to tune first and what to leave alone and which aspect of tuning will yield the most return without limiting the the rest of the vehicle. While he does give some explanations for certain vehicle behavior conditions and what to do to correct those situations. The bulk of the book mostly explains why vehicles do what they do while at the limit and what characteristics make a vehicle fast. If you can take the principles and explanations expressed in this book and understand them which is not hard to do, then you will have all you need to make informed decisions to tune your chassis given you know what each adjustment on your vehicle does.

I was the "brake man" for a recent FSAE team. I used Carroll Smith's _Tune to Win_ and _Engineer to Win_ to learn about designing and tuning the braking system.In retrospect, I can say that his books were useful but by no means a "one stop shop" for braking info. This is mainly because the book was written in a different era and for a different size car, so some of the recommendations don't apply. And if you are hoping for the equations necessary to do an actual engineering analysis on your system then you'll need Milliken's highly-celebrated _Race Car Vehicle Dynamics_ instead.More importantly, however, is that Smith doesn't define any of his terms, which is pretty rough if you're a newbie ("castellated dog discs," anyone?). You have to be "in-the-know" beforehand if you really want to get a lot out this book. I present this as a criticism/warning only because SAE does market this book to undergrads who, like me, aren't gearheads.Overall, even after I had a solid grasp of the braking system, I found myself learning a lot more by talking to others (forums, other teams, former teams, etc.) than reading this book.The braking section probably deserves three stars but I'm still giving this book four stars because I know that the section on suspension were very useful to our suspension team. I just don't think the braking section is the books strong point.We did model our bias bar based on his design, however. And, of course, he does give some solid maintenance advice.

The book i received has a slightly damaged cover and is the first edition of the book. This is only mildly inconvenient as i think the content is just about the same. I would have liked to know what I was ordering though.

Reference Text. Necessary. If you're building an engine, transmission, car, etc., you need this book.

A very good book whether you already know the subject material or don't have the first clue how to turn a wrench. I still go back and re-read it sometimes to refresh my knowledge; bought a second one as a loaner to aspiring technicians.

This is a great introduction to vehicle dynamics and a basic guide to the overall tuning of the vehicle. Carroll Smith gives just the right amount of theory to go with his practical advice toward the end of the book so you can understand why it works (or doesn't).Tune To Win does NOT take the place of Milliken & Milliken's Race Car Vehicle Dynamics but is certainly enough for tuning. Tune To Win does not have enough information for anyone building a car from scratch; for that, Race Car Vehicle Dynamics must be on the reading list.Do note that this book is quite old, but the laws of physics have not changed. Tire compounds have improved, good shocks are more available, there are more manufacturers of differentials on the market, etc, but all of Smith's tuning advice and explanations of vehicle dynamics still apply.. so this is still a great read in 2006!

As an student of mechanical engineering, the book makes this complex topic very approachable. I will warn any potential buyers that you should have a good understanding of physics to fully appreciate the depth of this book. Uses a lot of physics terminology such as angular acceleration and moment of inertia. Great for engineering students, and FSAE. Not for "Tuners" or "Street Racers"

Carrol Smith's book does a great job of introducing suspension design. The book also does a good job of giving you an idea of the amount of planning and work it takes to get a race car to perform well. The book will not teach you everything you need to know, but it will get you started. I recomend this for anyone who is interested in making their car handle better or even getting into racing. It's a must for anyone doing FSAE. While reading rememeber that Carrol Smith does have a sense of humor.

For a while I only read all I read was about journeys in kayak and other human-powered boats. I plowed through around ten books and this was one of my favorites. The writer describes the nature and history of these islands in a fascinating way, while weaving in various challenges. I especially learned a lot about the sad history of the local indigenous people - how the white man has gone about such encounters is shocking.

Nice account of the wilderness of the Aleutian Islands. Gripping adventure story about the challenges involved in kayaking such a remote, wild place.

I enjoyed this book for the history chapters more than for the adventure ones, which detail how a four-man crew of kayakers went to the Islands of Four Mountains in the Aleutian Island chain. The history sections are interesting and generally accurate and give a sense of the natural and, later, governmental hazards the Aleut (Unangan) people have faced over the course of their history. The author emphasizes the dangers of the environment and is rightly impressed by the creativity of the Aleut in surviving in this environment. They created the prototypes of the kayaks and gear that the author and all kayakers still use.The Russians treated the Aleut badly, forcing them to hunt for otter for weeks on end, but the Americans were not angels, either. Bowermaster notes how the American government deported many Aleuts during World War II to camps where they were mistreated and many died from hunger and lack of medical care. There is a poignancy to his praise of the Aleut when contrasted to the uninhabited state of the islands he and his crew explore. There are still Aleuts in the Aleutian Islands, although many did not return after WWII. See the Kate Shugak series by Dana Stabenow for an interesting fictional representation of this situation.The adventure chapters detailing the explorations of the author and his crew were not as interesting. A lot of it was about the gear they had and interpersonal tensions. When I was in Fairbanks I saw a documentary with the same name done by this group. It was more interesting because it was visually spectacular, but that doesn't come through as much here.This is worth reading, but isn't as much of a gripping read one might expect.

Subtitled, "Adventuring in Alaska's Islands of Fire and Ice," this is the account of Jon Bowermaster's modern-day exploration of the four Aleutian Islands in 1999. He's a writer for National Geographic, who sponsored this trip, and he and his three traveling companions were thus able to be properly outfitted with the best outdoor gear and kayaks available for the adventure.The trip took 25 days in mid-summer, but it sure didn't seem like summer to me. The Aleutian Islands are located in the heart of the Bering Sea, in one of the most dangerous and stormiest waters in the world. But the team Bowermaster put together were all skilled, experienced and strong men. They kayaked from island to island, camped on the beaches and hiked up the volcanic mountains that dominate this small world. They carried their food with them as well as camera equipment as one of the men was an official photographer for National Geographic.The best part of the book was the well-researched history. I am fascinated by all things about the frozen north and wondered if the Aleutian Islands as depicted by James Michener in "Alaska" was accurate. This book confirmed the accuracy of the fictional book and even added more. There are no people who live on the Aleutian Islands anymore even though they once held a population of more than 25,000. But first the Russians and then the Americans discovered that this was a place to hunt for seal and otter and forced the people to hunt for these pelts. After being isolated for thousands of years, the Aleuts had no natural resistance to disease and many of them died. There was still a small colony in the 1940s but they were all removed from the area because they were being attacked by Japan. Most of these people were sent to internment camps in Alaska and never returned to the Aleuts.No wonder this place attracted Bowermaster and his National Geographic crew. Of course, in spite of being properly outfitted, there was still danger everywhere, especially since they had no communication with the outside world. And they had to paddle their kayaks for as many as 7 hours without a rest through volatile and dangerous waters. Some of the time I felt I was right with them. The map could have been better, but the photographs were excellent -- definitely National Geographic quality. They captured the beauty and the isolation with a professional's eye.Because I have a particular interest in Alaska, I did enjoy this book. But the writing reads like a National Geographic piece -- clear, concise and accurate, but lacking in real passion or interesting personal details. The author tried to introduce a small bit of description of some tension in the group, but I had never gotten to know the people enough to really care. I guess I wanted it to be more than what it was -- four modern men dressed in Gore-tex looking for adventure. Therefore, as far as my own personal taste goes, I can only give it a modest recommendation.

I bought this on a whim. I am not a huge history buff, in fact I usually read fiction. I have read the obligatory, and did enjoy Schama's "An Embarassment of Riches" and many of Barbara Tuchman's books....but this is different and so much more authentic. The trove of papers and letters that are the basis for this book, provide fascinating details into life at the time, along with the emotion, eccentricity, and spirit of the merchant.

I'm a history buff and this book was, to me, a wonderful walk thru the Medieval period. It describes daily life, business practices, travel, family relationships, homes, family & friend relationships, the relocation of the Pope to Avignon etc. etc. I thought Iris Origo's form of writing was flowing and not in one part of the book did it drag or become boring. I intend to read more by Iris Origo.

Highly interesting (at least for me, a history buff) and well written. I will look for other books by her.

I loved this book when I first read it. I gave this copy to a friend on the way to Florence.

A superb book that really gives you a wonderful insight into how life was lived in the 14th century. Through the detailed documents preserved from this one merchant's incredible record of business and daily life, we can really get a glimpse into not just how international business was conducted, but also how a normal (if well off) family household functioned, relationships between different levels of society on a practical day to day basis, plus the wonderful rich and interesting personalities of the main people involved in this household. We see how artists functioned and worked, how tradesmen related to each other and their patrons and how connections were formed by businessmen to protect and further their interests. And as it quotes many of the people involved directly, you also get a grand feel for how people thought at the time.The only other book which has given this kind of overview is "The Cardinal's Hat" by mary Hollingsworth. That book handled the subject fairly chronologically and dealt with a much higher stratum of society but also using a rich source of direct documents. This book is a bit more scattered and follows somewhat more thematic lines but still traces the course of the life of Francesco Datini, the merchant of Prato. Wonderful reading for anyone who really wants to enter into the spirit of the times.

Though it's somewhat old-fashioned compared to more quantitative social histories, "TMOP" is a classic reconstruction of the life of a prosperous Italian merchant and his network of business and family contacts. Unlike a number of more recent efforts, Iris Origo has written a marvelously accessible life-&-times biography which has edified and entertained readers for over half a century. Other reviewers who have lamented its OP status will be pleased to learn that there are at least two reasonably-priced editions now in print. 2015 has also seen the publication of a fine companion volume, A. Crabb, "The Merchant of Prato's Wife." Crabb uses many of the same sources to detail her story, along with other materials not used by Origo. Teachers of graduate or advanced undergad courses could assign both works to fruitfully explore a gendered recreation of family and commerce in the early Italian Renaissance.

In his will, the medieval Tuscan merchant Francesco di Marco Datini ordered that all his account books and correspondence be gathered together and stored for posterity. These archives were lost soon after Datini died in 1410, but found again, remarkably intact, in 1870. These archives, constituting nearly 140,000 letters to and from Datini and 503 files of business documents, constitute the most complete record of medieval Italian life ever found. Iris Origo mined this treasure trove for all it was worth in "The Merchant of Prato," creating a fascinatingly detailed portrait of how people lived, what they ate, and what they thought in late-14th-century Tuscany. Because Datini was a merchant, his ledgers provide an intimate account of what goods were available to affluent Italians of his time, and in what quantity. Even more fascinating than the details of family life are Origo's reconstruction of the lives and personalities of her three central characters: Datini himself, his young wife Margherita, and his best friend Ser Lapo Mazzei. "Certainly he was a difficult man, either to serve or love," Origo says of Datini, and indeed it is a difficult character Datini presents to us through his letters: grasping, imperious, sharp-tongued, morbidly suspicious--in short a model of a self-made tycoon in any age. But a better side of Datini is shown in his correspondence with the spirited, outspoken Margherita--who could give as good as she got--and with the kindly, philosophical Lapo Mazzei. Mazzei--who founded a winemaking dynasty that continues to this day, and whose distant descendant Filippo Mazzei was a close friend of Thomas Jefferson--was constantly reminding Datini of his duties as a Christian, and at length succeeded in persuading him to leave the bulk of his vast fortune to the poor. The foundation for the poor created by Datini's will continues in Prato to this day. Origo recreates Datini and Mazzei as characters of Dickensian richness, with Mazzei--if you will--playing the Ghost of Christmas Present to Datini's Scrooge. This book is a masterpiece, and how it could be allowed to fall out of print is a mystery to me. It should be reprinted in a new edition as soon as possible.
