As a Postulant for Holy Orders, this book tells me everything I need to know about where to stand, how to read the Gospel, when the bishop takes off his/her mitre, and anything else I might need to know as a deacon within a service of worship. Plater does a wonderful job of walking the reader through each type of service within the Book of Common Prayer and the Prayer Book of the Anglican Church of Canada. He also provides additional resources for continuing education. This is a very readable, short book that will be a "go to" resource for me for years to come.

DEACONS IN THE LITURGY is written for Anglicans/Episcopalians in North America. As such, it will be of interest primarily to people of that communion. That does not stop it from having a wider appeal.What this book does so well and so simply is explain the role of the diaconate in the various liturgies of the church. It tells what to do and when to do it providing an expansion to the rubrics of the BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER. It does not delve very much into history but does bring history up to justify certain acts. It explains the diaconal functions from an ancient and ecumenical context and then makes some provision for modern practice and usage. At all stages, the relevant passages from the BCP and other US and Canadian resources are referenced. It is a great guide for Anglican deacons but it has more potential as well.Without explicitly saying so, the book describes many functions that have wider acceptance than just the Anglican Communion. Usually, these are evident by the lack of specific citations but they should be readily apparent to anyone with a passing knowledge of liturgy. This helps to differentiate denominational practice from wider practice and this book is simple enough, short enough and well written enough to be of use to others. This is especially true for United Methodists.The United Methodist Church revived the permanent diaconate in 1996. Since the most recent BOOK OF WORSHIP was published in 92, it has no knowledge of deacons in liturgical functions. They are left to founder or make things up as they go along. The institutional United Methodist Church needs to address this problem but this book would be an excellent stopgap measure for UM deacons. This is especially true since UM liturgy is inherited from the Church of England.A Must for Deacons!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this powerful little volume. It made clear the need of and the functionality of Deacons in the worship life of every congregation. As a bishop I learned much that, unfortunately, I didn’t already know. I’m going to meet with my Deacons and Remedy many things in our relationships and worship leading capacities.

Not only does Deacon Plater outline the function of diaconal ministry in the liturgy, but also describes the significance of these functions historically, theologically, and symbolically. Should be required reading for all deacons, but priests and bishops as well.

This small book provides important information about what deacons do. You'll also learn names of liturgical garments that you never knew existed. Also, learn where deacons place their stoles.That was new to me.I would have liked a bit about what it's like to be a deacon but that's a book someone else will write or maybe already has.

I finally found the book i was looking for. It has a lot of good info in a small package. I wish it were hard bound as I believe i will wear the paperback out quickly. This is the heartfelt story of a man who threw away his career, his marriage and his house because he started gambling. The book makes clear that he did well at school and in the army and then working in re-insurance. He wasn't afraid of hard work and he deserved his success and all the material trappings which went with it.Then he had a disabled child and his job started to become boring and mundane and he turned to gambling. It seemed to me that he needed excitement in his life - which he'd obtained by non-destructive means up to that point. Instead of looking for a job which gave him more satisfaction and excitement. To me the book read as though he could not deal with ordinary every day life. He needed excitement in order to function and gambling is probably more accessible via the internet than it has ever been to people of his background.For a while he managed to hide his addiction - which he did not even consider to be an addiction at the time. Then when he started to lose large sums of money he spent his wife's money and started selling things to raise money as well as using his company credit card for personal expenditure. Anyone not an addict would have seen the danger at that point if they hadn't seen it before.In the end he couldn't borrow anymore money and had lost his job. His wife and her parents didn't want anything to do with him but his own family rallied round and helped him to get back on his feet and stop gambling.This is a cautionary tale for anyone who is gambling but feels they have it under control and for those relatives or friends who believe they know someone who is gambling. Has he learned his lesson? Yes it seems so but it seemed to me that he would always have a problem unless he learns to accept that not all life is exciting and that saying sorry however eloquently doesn't guarantee forgiveness and acceptance.There is a useful list of organisations which can help problem gamblers at the end of the book. I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley for review purposes.

This is a remarkable story about an ordinary man. It's told with heartfelt honesty without seeking sympathy. It's a story of loss, both emotional and financial, and regret but is ultimately a tale of love and hope.Justyn Rees Larcombe seemed to have it all. In many ways his childhood and schooling could be considered privileged as he received a boarding school education. His army career was a glittering success followed by high powered jobs in the City. A happy family man with a huge salary, fast car it's difficult to both imagine and understand how it all went so horribly wrong. He makes no excuse other than his own failing and weakness and doesn't attribute blame elsewhere. But what started as perhaps a bit of almost harmless fun seemed to trigger behaviours which took him out of control at breakneck speed. He was an online gambling addict and the compulsion to place bets soon became his primary focus in life. Savings soon disappeared and with cunning and duplicity, he was soon finding dishonourable ways to fund his habit. His account was at times heartbreaking; like watching a train crash and picking over the carnage.I was concerned that there might be a strong religious element to the story. But it's not an 'I've found God and now I'm saved' account at all. It's brutal in places. Not literally, but there's a great deal of emotional pain and he gives a highly readable account of the depths to which he sank and how those around were affected and reacted. As a biography, it's extraordinary. Mr Larcombe has no easy answers, but his clarity and insight can only be helpful to anyone wishing to gain an understanding of addictive behaviour. It's a different and compelling read and my thanks to the publisher for a review copy via Netgalley.

I am required to use this for a college class, as it is more convenient for them than developing their own course. Every negative thing written here on Amazon is true.This book is extremely poorly written and should have NEVER been published. It needs about 400 pages of drivel edited out of it. The Drivel includes idiotic asides and pages of irrelevant case history babble, which have nothing to do with solving the problems. It's only purpose seems to be to indulge the author, whose grasp on the English language is about as impressive as his inability to gauge his audience. One must work very hard to unearth any of the real content out of the dense wordy nonsense in this book.Unfortunately, colleges are using this as a beginning JavaScript book but if author wrote it with an audience in mind (and that is doubtful), it would be for advanced programmers as it jumps right into advanced programming concepts from the start.These advanced concepts (used at the beginning), are covered in the latter half of any other JavaScript books I have read. The annoying thing is that he jumps into advanced programming without bothering to explain the basics: the syntax and the structure of the language.It has multiple coding typos which unnecessarily wasted hours of my time. Don't bother trying to find them on the Cengage website. Errata doesn't matter to this irresponsible publisher.Author does talk about JavaScript in the text but it is so buried in disorganized verbage that it's extremely difficult to pick out the concepts.Yes, I'll get an A in it because, I, like others, can sit for hours and copy code. But I haven't gotten a single thing out of it. I'm reading two other books that actually instruct rather than obscure information. Those books are: JavaScript Step by Step and JavaScript A Beginner's Guide by J. Pollack. Both are excellent books with tutorials, with the latter being the more in depth of the two.Cengage should never have published this book. The unfortunate thing is that a lot of colleges use it simply because Cengage offers it and it relieves them from having to develop a course that students might actually learn something from. Cengage is doing both the schools AND the students a huge injustice by selling/marketing this.I will most likely ask for a refund for the course.If your school uses this book for their course(s), my advice is not take it or find another school--or simply learn it on your own if it's not required in your program.Note to the colleges using this book: Stop ripping students off. You know better.

I won't go into further detail as the other reviews here cover it. But after having struggled through this book, all I can say is the same as the others: if you can copy the orange code out of this book into a text editor, you can complete your assignments. As for learning anything, it does jump too quickly into verbose language about programming, and I don't need the wordy fiction to go along with it.Our school does have prerequisites (such as Introductory Programming Logic, which is a course based on writing in pseudo-code to introduce basic programming concepts, and knowledge of HTML and CSS). I knew I was slim on JavaScript as I've never liked it as a language (I feel server-side processing is always the most reliable), but now that so much of the web relies on it, I wanted to get a better grip on it.After having worked through about 2/3 of this book now, I can say that I've really learned very little. There is no way of introducing the basic functions first and summarizing them; no, it jumps right in to writing code assuming the reader already knows coding in another language.On Chapter 7, I got hung up on the three buttons not loading the appropriate stylesheets, despite having proofread my code half a dozen times. I'm going to sleep on it. As for Chapter 8...nice window for the gallery, except the "X" to close the window is on the wrong side (but working, heh). Copied their code verbatim and again, sleeping on it and will check it over in the morning again before I submit it.I know they are trying to teach the basics of how JS works, but a lot of the examples are now superseded by using the JQuery library. I mean, who today writes an image gallery from the ground up when JQuery and a few lines of code do the same thing? This doesn't live up to its "New Perspectives" name...more like "Outdated Perspectives".I wanted to hang onto this as a reference, but forget it: this seems like a book designed by committee, not written to be helpful. The minute the school starts buying books back, I'm selling! I won't even insult the wood-burning stove with it!

This is an awful textbook. Be wary of any teacher that assigns this textbook for a class, as it's evidence that they either don't know good material when they see it, or they're just using the teacher's companion materials as a substitute for their own teaching material.Reading through this textbook has been a considerable pain, as I have to read things over and over again to understand what's being explained. Sometimes new concepts are introduced or questions are naturally raised, but no answer is alluded to or provided until later on in the chapter (or maybe never). It's clear that these writers aren't good teachers as they can't anticipate the thought processes of their readers. Oftentimes I'd get fed up with their writing and just Google the topic myself and find a much more clearly written explanation from some random blogger. That's pretty sad.To add insult to injury, every chapter contains at least 1 or 2 serious typos or mistakes that result in confusion. In the chapter I'm reading now for example (Tutorial 5, page 255), they actually state the opposite of an expected result in an example of a regular expression.Don't suffer through this textbook. Demand a new one or complain to the department if your teacher insists on using this.

This map lists every city, town, and village in Guatemala.It is a great map, but the type is so small you will needa magnifying glass. My friend and I located villages not onany other map. It is very large and printed on both side.Anyone who thinks Guatemala is a small country won'tthink so after studying this map. The map of GuatemalaCty is not detailed enough and you will need a regularcity map. That is to be expected.

I was initially very disappointed to see that the latest version of this map that Amazon was selling was this 2008 version, when I knew that there was an updated 2014 version available. I called Amazon to see if they could get the new version in stock fairly quickly, but their poorly informed customer service people basically said there was nothing they could do. Since time was getting short to order through some other source, I reluctantly ordered the 2008 version, figuring it would be good enough for my needs on this trip.I was very pleasantly surprised to actually receive the new 2014 edition! Our friends at Amazon need to update their listing.As others have reported, it is very detailed, contains large-scale inset maps of Guatemala City and its surrounding area, as well as Antigua Guatemala, and the paper appears to be of good quality. It has a coating that makes water bead up and run off, so their statement about the map being waterproof appears to be correct. Highly recommended.

Good map. We rented a car and drove all over the place, the map proved accurate and helpful. Note that if you are going to drive around the country, you should find more detailed city maps to go along with this one, to cover you in any towns of any particular size that you might find yourself in. Guidebook maps often only have the center of town.

We travel there a lot and have been looking for a map with good detail. This is it! And it also appears to be very durable.

I bought this map before going to Guatemala to visit my son and his girlfriend who live there. The map was very helpful and the material it is printed on makes it very durable. My son hadn't seen such a good map of their country, so I left it with them. (I can buy another copy before my next visit.) The only "down" side was that the map happened to "break" right in the part of the country near where they live. But all the information was very clear and detailed.

brought this map on a trip to Guatemala and it held up well. The paper almost seems like a cross between paper and plastic, and although I never got it wet I think it would hold up. It withstood being opened, unfolded and refolded a bunch of times without starting to tear at the folds.

Very useful. Maps are hard to find once in Guatemala.

I wish I hadn't bought this map, it was completely useless! The map shows little to no detail and the majority of the roads the map does show are merely the major highways. I couldn't use the map to find hotels, airports, or any other basic information. What a waste of money :o(

I'm very disappointed in this purchase and will be returning it. This is strictly a problem workbook with an answer key. Any instruction or lesson material must be in the online videos available to purchasers. One reason I chose this book was that it had so many 5-star reviews. When I received it, I couldn't figure WHY there were so many 5-star reviews until I looked at the bottom of the title page where the publisher/author offers a free gift in exchange for a 5-star review. All those 5-star reviews influenced my decision to purchase and I feel misled.

There are enough good reviews on here I don’t feel the need to tell our entire story. I’ll just say that this book took my daughter (who was average to behind in 4th grade math last year) to well above average on her math standardized testing this year. She even got to the point where she would do the lessons without me because it was so easy to understand and do. (She has never done that before!) We are so pleased I bought another copy for her sister to do next year and the next level up for her come Fall. You really can’t find a better value for a homeschool math curriculum. We did not need to buy any other workbooks or products for the entire year!

A good workbook -- it's wonderful to have basics with all these tests. However, to get the lessons you have to go online (some of the kids I work with don't have Internet at home).Also -- THE INTRODUCTION OF THE BOOK STATES THAT BUYERS WILL RECEIVE SOME KIND OF GIFT FOR POSTING A REVIEW. This is not okay in my book. People who are promised a present subconsciously are usually nicer to the giver than they would otherwise be -- it's a basic behavioral truth. This ends up getting more reviews, and more favorable reviews, posted for this product. It skews the all-important ratings.BTW, no, I will NOT be retrieving my "free gift" for posting this review.

I'll start by telling you that I was an after-school caregiver/tutor and a substitute teacher, before becoming a homeschooling mom. This is an excellent book! My son is 8 years old, but an advanced learner. I was so happy to find something that was for 4-5th grade because that's exactly where he's at with his studies! The everyday speed drills have really improved how quickly he performs multiplication problems, and because they're on every page: he PLANS-ON and ENJOYS testing himself everyday! And I'll admit: I have never been a math genius (yes, that means I've been the exact opposite! LOL), but even I've learned all the things I never understood when I was a kid trying to learn math! I love working out fractions!!One warning: if your child answers something incorrectly according to the answers in back, you may want to work the problem out for yourself, just to be sure. I have found a few wrong answers in back, of which I've already emailed the publisher. But don't let that deter you: it's an excellent program and I can't wait to purchase other books from this series! Hmm..."Word Problems"...LOL

This program is great because it is not intimidating to the struggling math student. My 6th daughter was falling behind in math and losing her confidence. The presentation of each concept is straightforward; the online videos are perfect for a student who wants to work independently (or without mom's help). We only used Book 1, and I feel confident my daughter will be prepared for a pre-alg. course for 7th grade.There isn't much "why" being taught here, but my daughter was getting bogged down with that in her old math program (i.e. 4 different ways to do x). Sometimes it's nice to be clearly told "how" to do something. Of note: we do occasionally come across a typo. If your answer doesn't match the answer key, work through the problem again, just to be sure.

Could give 5 points, but the author promises $19 gift for that. Not with me.This is basically a very good set of basic math drills, designed in a original, very accurate and thorough way and provided with very clear instructions of how to use them. Intended by the author to be used 20 min a day (one page) which includes reviewing of the previous, new material, a word problem and even a mental math exercising - very well thought over. No, it is not a textbook. It does not teach all the details. No, it is probably not a complete set of drills if you want 30-100 exercises per each topic. But for many people this may work and for others it may be a very good review or remedy material. Alas, I would not recommend this book to those who live and study out of North America, but as a book helping with american way of studying school math it looks quite adequate, close to perfect.

The book itself is okay. The educational material is nice, but there are some flaws in the answers. Some questions have answers that do are not correct. They would have been correct if they had typed in the question correctly. Ex. What are the costs below 60%? The key word is below. However, the answers were 25%, some others, and 60%. They requested BELOW 60%, not 60% and below. Beware of this. Secondly, the answers are in the back of the book, therefore your child might cheat. Thirdly and lastly, the biggest disclaimer is that they claim to give you an $18.95 value "gift" (probably another one of their books) for a five star Amazon review. Check the pictures for proof. The point of mentioning this is to inform you guys not to trust some of the other comments. I don't know who is honest or not, but be careful.

I had a PSA test a few years ago and when results showed a high PSA. I agree to a biopsy. It was very painful and I was peeing blood for a week and blood in my semen for 2 weeks. It showed no signs of cancer. A year later my doctor did another PSA test (I didn't know they do a PSA test every year when a man reaches a certain age) and wanted to perform another biopsy. I started researching PSA tests and immediately found Dr Ablin, the respected Pathologist who discovered the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA). He explains that it only indicated that you have a prostate (hence the term Prostate specific not cancer specific. In the chapter "the color of money" he explains how they got FDA approval and how it Is a multi-billion dollar industry.

I highly recommend this book. We need to be proactive in taking care of our health. I purchased this book two weeks before I was due to under a biopsy on my pancreas. It all started after my doctor informed that my PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) was very elevated and that I needed to make an appointment with a Urologist. Following the doctor's orders, I did just that. The Urologist agreed with what the doctor had found, a highly elevated PSA. As a result he recommend that a biopsy be performed, to determine if I have cancer. I said, "Okay." Two weeks before the scheduled procedure, I contacted the Urologist's office to find out what all I needed to do, and what could I expect at the procedure. Needless to say, after being given instructions, and what to expect afterwards, especially the part of the multiple incisions, and the duration (possibly months) of bleeding, I decided to (Thank God!) search out more information. That's when I purchased and downloaded this book. After I started reading it, I knew that there was no way that I was going to under a biopsy on my pancreas. Absolutely Not! All I can say is, WHEW! CLOSE CALL! Sorry for those who've never got to read this book or any such book like it, before they took the plunge. Do yourself a favor...get the book. And women, if your husband or boyfriend won't, then do it for them. Enlighten yourself, that you can enlighten them. It is said that, "What you don't know can't hurt you." Well, I certainly beg to differ, because it truly can. After reading this book, I am certain that you will agree with me. And the man who benefits will be so ever grateful.

After reading this excellent book, I now wonder three years after completing prostate cancer treatment and being cancer free with minimal side effects, if I really needed treatment. When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer my background as a psychologist with an interest in research led me to reviewing the literature on prostate cancer. I became aware of the risks of severe side effects inherent in most prostate cancer treatments and the dangers of the profit driven prostate cancer industry. I then selected the treatment I believe has the least risk of side effects, proton therapy. I discovered that most of the men going through this treatment with me also invested a great deal of time and effort reviewing this same literature. Unfortunately, most men don't seek such knowledge and instead make the understandable mistake of trusting the physician, almost always a urologist, who diagnosed their prostate cancer and then recommends treatment. A very real danger exists when the livelihood of this physician is based on patients agreeing to the treatment he or she is recommending and then providing. Dr. Richard Ablin has clearly achieved his stated goal for writing this book of “...exposing the abuse of power and profit over patient ethos” as the prostate cancer industry incorrectly uses the PSA to scare men into treatment. Men should not automatically agree to the use of the PSA to aid in diagnosing prostate cancer. They should instead get a second opinion from their internist or medical oncologist. Men diagnosed with prostate cancer should consider watchful waiting and also do their research on the side effects of different treatments. It is very sad how the medical-pharmaceutical conglomerate has absconded with the health of our society. Free will can only be exercised when the patient has "Informed Consent". This cannot be accomplished when your physician has massively inadequate knowledge in numerous areas in which they feel competent (but are not). This book, written by the scientist who discovered the PSA (prostate specific antigen molecule) exposes all that he has now learned regarding the misuse by doctors and surgeons of his discovery.
