I'm very disappointed in this purchase and will be returning it. This is strictly a problem workbook with an answer key. Any instruction or lesson material must be in the online videos available to purchasers. One reason I chose this book was that it had so many 5-star reviews. When I received it, I couldn't figure WHY there were so many 5-star reviews until I looked at the bottom of the title page where the publisher/author offers a free gift in exchange for a 5-star review. All those 5-star reviews influenced my decision to purchase and I feel misled.
There are enough good reviews on here I don’t feel the need to tell our entire story. I’ll just say that this book took my daughter (who was average to behind in 4th grade math last year) to well above average on her math standardized testing this year. She even got to the point where she would do the lessons without me because it was so easy to understand and do. (She has never done that before!) We are so pleased I bought another copy for her sister to do next year and the next level up for her come Fall. You really can’t find a better value for a homeschool math curriculum. We did not need to buy any other workbooks or products for the entire year!
A good workbook -- it's wonderful to have basics with all these tests. However, to get the lessons you have to go online (some of the kids I work with don't have Internet at home).Also -- THE INTRODUCTION OF THE BOOK STATES THAT BUYERS WILL RECEIVE SOME KIND OF GIFT FOR POSTING A REVIEW. This is not okay in my book. People who are promised a present subconsciously are usually nicer to the giver than they would otherwise be -- it's a basic behavioral truth. This ends up getting more reviews, and more favorable reviews, posted for this product. It skews the all-important ratings.BTW, no, I will NOT be retrieving my "free gift" for posting this review.
I'll start by telling you that I was an after-school caregiver/tutor and a substitute teacher, before becoming a homeschooling mom. This is an excellent book! My son is 8 years old, but an advanced learner. I was so happy to find something that was for 4-5th grade because that's exactly where he's at with his studies! The everyday speed drills have really improved how quickly he performs multiplication problems, and because they're on every page: he PLANS-ON and ENJOYS testing himself everyday! And I'll admit: I have never been a math genius (yes, that means I've been the exact opposite! LOL), but even I've learned all the things I never understood when I was a kid trying to learn math! I love working out fractions!!One warning: if your child answers something incorrectly according to the answers in back, you may want to work the problem out for yourself, just to be sure. I have found a few wrong answers in back, of which I've already emailed the publisher. But don't let that deter you: it's an excellent program and I can't wait to purchase other books from this series! Hmm..."Word Problems"...LOL
This program is great because it is not intimidating to the struggling math student. My 6th daughter was falling behind in math and losing her confidence. The presentation of each concept is straightforward; the online videos are perfect for a student who wants to work independently (or without mom's help). We only used Book 1, and I feel confident my daughter will be prepared for a pre-alg. course for 7th grade.There isn't much "why" being taught here, but my daughter was getting bogged down with that in her old math program (i.e. 4 different ways to do x). Sometimes it's nice to be clearly told "how" to do something. Of note: we do occasionally come across a typo. If your answer doesn't match the answer key, work through the problem again, just to be sure.
Could give 5 points, but the author promises $19 gift for that. Not with me.This is basically a very good set of basic math drills, designed in a original, very accurate and thorough way and provided with very clear instructions of how to use them. Intended by the author to be used 20 min a day (one page) which includes reviewing of the previous, new material, a word problem and even a mental math exercising - very well thought over. No, it is not a textbook. It does not teach all the details. No, it is probably not a complete set of drills if you want 30-100 exercises per each topic. But for many people this may work and for others it may be a very good review or remedy material. Alas, I would not recommend this book to those who live and study out of North America, but as a book helping with american way of studying school math it looks quite adequate, close to perfect.
The book itself is okay. The educational material is nice, but there are some flaws in the answers. Some questions have answers that do are not correct. They would have been correct if they had typed in the question correctly. Ex. What are the costs below 60%? The key word is below. However, the answers were 25%, some others, and 60%. They requested BELOW 60%, not 60% and below. Beware of this. Secondly, the answers are in the back of the book, therefore your child might cheat. Thirdly and lastly, the biggest disclaimer is that they claim to give you an $18.95 value "gift" (probably another one of their books) for a five star Amazon review. Check the pictures for proof. The point of mentioning this is to inform you guys not to trust some of the other comments. I don't know who is honest or not, but be careful.
