Review

To take honest stock of ourselves and to place our experience within the larger world, this is the task of the ideal writer, work that is made harder in a literary and political climate created to validate the experiences of certain numbers at the expense of excluding and denying even the existence of others of us. David Mura faces this challenge head-on and gives us a book that is essential reading for anyone who considers the writer's art a serious, and sacred, opportunity to transform the world. A Stranger's Journey speaks to writers and teachers willing to embrace the task of complicating our idealized version of reality and who want to push themselves, and others, to face ‘the blemishes and blasphemies’ of our lives with clarity and passion. Mura takes his place among an illustrious group of spirit guides, from Baldwin to Danticat, from Naipaul to Diaz, in showing us exactly how to construct the requisite tools in order to dismantle the master's house. (Ru Freeman author of On Sal Mal Lane)Upon finishing this book, I think that we will no longer be strangers. We will no longer feel that we are on our journey alone. This book is the intersection where our paths meet, where we can forge bonds that transcend the racial divide. Maybe from here on out, we can accompany each other on our journeys as friends and fellow artists, but most importantly, as fellow humans. (Reyna Grande author of The Distance Between Us)“A Stranger’s Journey is an essential work of literary criticism and memoir, challenging readers and writers alike to think about writing, race, and identity in new ways." (Rebecca Hussey Foreword Reviews)

In this book, Mura speaks with insight, clarity, and grace on: (a) the racism that exists even within supposedly "liberal" spaces such as creative writing programs, including how to survive and how to address race and ethnicity in healthier and more inclusive ways, (b) the elements of narrative in the writing of fiction and memoir, and (c) in contrast to those who would separate craft from politics, the intersection of those two. I hope this book will be widely read and taught in creative writing programs, by both writers of color and white writers. Also, for any interested, I interviewed Mura about the book. There's a video of it on my blog, Corrigan Literary Review.

David Mura’s “A Stranger’s Journey: Race, Identity, and Narrative Craft in Writing”: this book is a delight from beginning to end. A lifetime’s experience of a writer and teacher of color struggling and prevailing in a white cultural universe. The book is part social critique of how creative writing is taught at the university, a world in which literature has been viewed as being exclusively by, for, and about white people, people of color being at most decoration or stage props for the “real” lives of white characters for whom the “racial other” is never enters their consciousness. The book is also part survival guide for minority authors, presenting strategies for the advance of their artistic and literary impulses in the face of an oblivious white cultural wall. Validation is offered for the life experiences of minority authors and their efforts to put their stories on paper, even as Mura uses authors from an older canon—the racist Joseph Conrad and the anti-Semite T.S. Eliot, for example—as guideposts for an author’s journey. There are comparisons and examples of what Mura finds valuable, and what he finds wanting (one comparison between Margaret Mitchell and Toni Morrisson is like the proverbial killing a canary with an atom bomb). The book is replete with examples to illustrate Mura's observations from authors like Sherman Alexie, V.S. Naipaul, James Baldwin, Garrett Hongo, Maxine Hong Kingston, Junot Diaz, a real critical mass of minority author literary universes. The “how to/ hands on” content reflects the author’s long struggles and experience in the field. Finally the book, although addressed primarily to budding authors of color, is directed at creating a new kind of audience, one which accepts the reality of an America which is not exclusively white. In some sense, by accepting and embracing the reality of “the other”, all audiences may someday see the triumph of a post-racial America, which some see now but which does not yet exist. I don’t know to what extent the book is addressed to persons my age (although I think David Mura and I are about the same age). For Mura, writing is discovering identity, a journey and, for authors of color, the stranger’s journey. I’m afraid that, at a certain age, after struggling to establish an identity, sometimes even in spite of the struggle, one realizes that he or she has an identity, for better or for worse, and life becomes maintaining a place for one’s self in the world. David Mura’s book urges the reader to take up the journey again, and he’s a splendid guide for the tour.

Part of a writer's work is to venture beyond one's one emotional neighborhood and to stay apprised of every aspect of an evolving and change world. David Mura's A STRANGER'S JOURNEY addresses this need with its remarkable combination of solid craft advice to young writers and literary criticism for a multicultural America. His insights on inclusion, on voice, and especially on the writer's journey as its own Joseph Campbell odyssey, are profound and memorable. As a screenwriter myself, I recommend this book wholeheartedly.

excellent, thoughtful read. engaging and nuanced. ordered extra to share with friends

A brilliant collection of essays that function as a craft book, a memoir, and critical social commentary in one. There are few writers with as much gravitas as Mura, and it comes out here as both intellectual and accessible.

David Mura’s “A Stranger’s Journey” is a new kind of literary criticism—personal, postcolonial, analytic and dramatic—his insights into the situation of the writer of color amidst centrist assumptions and prohibitions open a new field of critical and creative thinking woven together in a book that could have been called “Castiglione’s The Courtier Meets Sun-tzu’s Art of War.” — Garrett Hongo
