I normally don't write reviews but felt compelled after receiving this book. I am a professional voice talent and do my own audio editing/mastering. I am comfortable around eq and compression working with it every day. When I read the description and reviews on this book I thought there would be some great eq and compression insights to learn...I was shocked when I got this pamphlet...its really not even a book. What you will get on eq is several pages that describe what EQ is and several concepts. You WILL NOT get any details on how to actually EQ. So if you are buying this to get better at using eq you will be very disappointed...again you will only get several pages of brief concepts and definitions. Compression section offers a little more instruction but again it's mostly definitions that can quickly looked up on Google. I am not kidding I went through the whole pamphlet in about 15 minutes. If you really want to learn how to apply eq and compression save your money...if you want 15 min read and some definitions get this pamphlet. I can't believe the reviews are so high on this...its unreal.
Great read! I've self taught myself over the last ten years and just recently bumped into a professional audio engineer who gave me lots of tips and tricks that were all parallel to everything you touch on. One thing you completely nailed, the "automatic volume fader" lol the amount of times you used that name at and around page 30/33 had me both laughing and smiling at the same time. It makes sense, it works, especially for something that everyone seems to lable as "the most important thing, ever". Those who have given this a bad review, must have been expecting a degree in audio engineering for 11 bucks lol. I found this very useful, especially the rule of 300, using a notepad, the front/back method and slingshoting. Thank you N.N.
Decent read for the very beginning stages of live or recording audio engineers. (I’m a live guy). Compression can be a little cryptic, using it effectively with an eq a little more so. It leans a little more toward the recording aspect. Completely neglects the fact that a quality eq and compressor (outboard or plugin) will have a characteristic that effects different signal paths with a signal coloring. (Yes a compressor is an automatic fader, but not only that) But that’s for another book maybe. Would recommend for people in about the first year of learning, otherwise it doesn’t really contain any earthshaking industry secrets.
Teaches you how to EQ your instrument's in a way that is simple, structured, clear, concise and, best of all, macroscopic! The broad strokes approach is great because you can actually hear and understand what you are doing. I don't really know what I'm doing when I try to find harsh frequencies by sweeping with a narrow band. It seems every frequency sounds irratating in isolation. But when you use Q = 1 and a generous gain/decrease, you always know if the change you applied was for better or for worse. And his 4-Zone-Mix-Theory is also something awesome, cause it limits the amount of time you waste experimenting with processing by focusing your attention into only 4 important regions of the frequency spectrum.
The information is decent, but the presentation needs work. Several typos and bad editing here and there. Lots of blank or near blank pages, which I found pretty annoying. What am I paying for here?It seems obvious this was intended as a Kindle or PDF reference that someone turned into a "book". As a focused reference for a class or workbook for an assignment, it might be OK, but there are much better references out there.
An incredible book, giving some hard and fast tips about getting your mixes to sound better with these two very important concepts in audio engineering. Great reference.
Quick read....clearly written....breaks it down into easy to understand terms. I wish I would have had this info a long time ago. Highly recommended....especially if you're fairly new to mixing. To Nathan....please make all of your books in print form.....it looked like the new one is just a Kindle book.
After what seemed to be the complex task of understanding the relationship between EQ and Compression, this book has given me the knowledge and self-confidence that I've always wanted to have as a developing audio engineer and producer. Along with this book, I have read the author's others as well, including "The 3 Space Reverb Framework" and "The Bus Compression Masterclass". With this wealth of information given to me so simply, I can confidently say that this book, along with the others, has been the single greatest investment into my skills as an audio engineer.
