In 1970 he identified PSA―the prostate specific antigen that is used as a test for prostate cancer. For decades he has fought against the misuse of his discovery, including a 2010 New York Times op-ed titled "The Great Prostate Mistake." He lives in Tucson, AZ.Ronald Piana is a science writer specializing in oncology. He has published more than 400 bylined articles in leading medical journals.

I had a PSA test a few years ago and when results showed a high PSA. I agree to a biopsy. It was very painful and I was peeing blood for a week and blood in my semen for 2 weeks. It showed no signs of cancer. A year later my doctor did another PSA test (I didn't know they do a PSA test every year when a man reaches a certain age) and wanted to perform another biopsy. I started researching PSA tests and immediately found Dr Ablin, the respected Pathologist who discovered the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA). He explains that it only indicated that you have a prostate (hence the term Prostate specific not cancer specific. In the chapter "the color of money" he explains how they got FDA approval and how it Is a multi-billion dollar industry.

I highly recommend this book. We need to be proactive in taking care of our health. I purchased this book two weeks before I was due to under a biopsy on my pancreas. It all started after my doctor informed that my PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) was very elevated and that I needed to make an appointment with a Urologist. Following the doctor's orders, I did just that. The Urologist agreed with what the doctor had found, a highly elevated PSA. As a result he recommend that a biopsy be performed, to determine if I have cancer. I said, "Okay." Two weeks before the scheduled procedure, I contacted the Urologist's office to find out what all I needed to do, and what could I expect at the procedure. Needless to say, after being given instructions, and what to expect afterwards, especially the part of the multiple incisions, and the duration (possibly months) of bleeding, I decided to (Thank God!) search out more information. That's when I purchased and downloaded this book. After I started reading it, I knew that there was no way that I was going to under a biopsy on my pancreas. Absolutely Not! All I can say is, WHEW! CLOSE CALL! Sorry for those who've never got to read this book or any such book like it, before they took the plunge. Do yourself a favor...get the book. And women, if your husband or boyfriend won't, then do it for them. Enlighten yourself, that you can enlighten them. It is said that, "What you don't know can't hurt you." Well, I certainly beg to differ, because it truly can. After reading this book, I am certain that you will agree with me. And the man who benefits will be so ever grateful.

After reading this excellent book, I now wonder three years after completing prostate cancer treatment and being cancer free with minimal side effects, if I really needed treatment. When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer my background as a psychologist with an interest in research led me to reviewing the literature on prostate cancer. I became aware of the risks of severe side effects inherent in most prostate cancer treatments and the dangers of the profit driven prostate cancer industry. I then selected the treatment I believe has the least risk of side effects, proton therapy. I discovered that most of the men going through this treatment with me also invested a great deal of time and effort reviewing this same literature. Unfortunately, most men don't seek such knowledge and instead make the understandable mistake of trusting the physician, almost always a urologist, who diagnosed their prostate cancer and then recommends treatment. A very real danger exists when the livelihood of this physician is based on patients agreeing to the treatment he or she is recommending and then providing. Dr. Richard Ablin has clearly achieved his stated goal for writing this book of “...exposing the abuse of power and profit over patient ethos” as the prostate cancer industry incorrectly uses the PSA to scare men into treatment. Men should not automatically agree to the use of the PSA to aid in diagnosing prostate cancer. They should instead get a second opinion from their internist or medical oncologist. Men diagnosed with prostate cancer should consider watchful waiting and also do their research on the side effects of different treatments. The instructions in this book are clear, but elementary. There's very little explanation of how to use varied yarns or fibers and little about varying weaving patterns or other shape looms. Some of that is covered in Ms. Stump's other book Pin Loom Weaving. I just wish it had been covered in this one. The projects lean strongly towards the scrappy 'loving hands at home" and folk craft look, with critters, flowers, bags, pillows, afghans, some rectangle scarves and shawls, etc. The interesting cover project, unfortunately, was sewn together crookedly. The rectangular front pouch pocket is glaringly sewn on off grain. I would not have made it a "cover project" without correcting that error. The Marilyn Wing Bag in contrast, is quite polished and well made. So, all in all, it's a mixed bag. [sorry for the bad pun]

I am not a huge fan of the projects, however, they do provide good information on a variety of joins and construction techniques that would be helpful when designing your own projects. The backpack (on the cover) will teach the reader how to create 2 dimensionally. There are chapters dedicated to 2" looms, a knitting loom and potholder loom. All weaving is plain weave, no twills or patterns.

Wonderful new pin weaving book! The book is great for beginners with well written instructions and has interesting ideas for those that are more familiar with pin weaving. I am intrigued by the inclusion of bias weaving and weaving triangles on a 4 inch loom. There are instructions for things with both practical uses and instructions for knick-knacks. The book is user friendly with good pictures and illustrations and highlighted tips and variations. I can't wait to start weaving!

I try not to leave gushing five star reviews, I tend to trust the four star ones more. However the only complaint I have about this book is that it is a very awkward size and I look forward to the kindle version.Ok, here are the things I like about it: versatility. Pin looms have a lot of possibilities, and for instance showing how to bias weave on a zoom loom makes it twice as useful, even more when triangles are added. I always assumed there was a way to weave continuous on a pot holder loom without crocheting, and here are instructions for it.And using the adjustable sock loom to make woven cuffs, not to mention that it Vann serve as a 2x4 and 2x6 loom is brilliant. I've tried to make woven cuffs, pre warped with one of my other pin looms, and this method is cleaner, and covers different wrist sizes (I have six inch wrists and everything I made was way too big.)Accessibility: It's easy for someone who doesnt want to invest a lot of money to try things out - a plastic potholder loom is readily available and quite inexpensive.This is a very versatile all inclusive book and I recommend it. Beginners might want to take the author"s advice and watch YouTube tutorials to supplement basic instructions, sometimes just need the moving pictures. Look forward to the kindle our other electronic version of this because that is easy more portable, and when you literally craft on the nyc subway, portable is important.

I'm a complete beginner at this and found this book very helpful. When I decided I wanted to learn pin looming, I was just thinking it would make scarves and bags. There's instructions in here for bracelets as well as very cute leaves and flowers. There's many projects I wouldn't make, like mug hugs and many of the wall hangings I didn't care for but overall I'm glad I purchased this book.

So pin weaving is very simple and easy but not a lot of stuff comes to mind when making things from it. Mostly just blankets but these projects can open your mind some. You can even felt a pin square I had no idea. I've tried one project and it turned out nicely.

This is a great book for people who enjoy weaving on the smaller portable looms. Lots of clear instructions, inspiration and colorful projects!

This is a totally beautiful book full of exciting ideas!

This book is so good, my daughter is 9 years old and a huge animal lover, she simply loved this book. She opened it up and read it pretty quickly, but she became an instant fan of Jane Goodall and was so happy to learn she's still alive. She really loved the illustrations as well. Although she's in 4th grade and a pretty easy read, she asked me to buy her the entire series. Yikes. Xmas present.

Great book. Great story. Wonderful message for kids, especially girls. Thought it would be short but it's a good size book. Not too many big words but also enough to challenge their reading skills.

My grand-daughter, who just turned seven, absolutely loves this series by Brad Meltzer. She has several titles, with a couple more (Amelia Earhart and Helen Keller) tucked away for Christmas. As an educator, I am particularly interested in heroic role models for young girls. As always, Brad's love of history shines through and infuses a spirit of learning and aspiration. I highly recommend these books for any young reader.

I love all these books. What a great way to introduce kids to historical figures. And my 3 year old loves them. They fully hold her attention. It's adorable to hear her say That's Jane, she likes animals

I LOVE Jane Goodall myself - I love her as female role model, but just a human being who just pursued her passion and moved the big needle. So when I saw this book suggested on Amazon, I bought it for my 4yo daughter. I wasn't expecting her to be moved by her story, but I thought that she might like it because she likes animal. It's not a short book, for the first time when I read the whole book, she said "that was a long book!". But then she asked me a while later that she wanted me to read the book, and I think so far I've read to her 3 times total or so.But to my surprise - when my mom came to our place and playing with my daughter, she was showing all her toys and books and she picked up this book and she said "Her name is Jane Goodall and she likes monkeys" - and I was like, "What did I just hear?!?!". I now realized the power of these books and the way we (as parents) bring these incredible human beings' stories into their lives. I will buy other books again.

Wow! if I could collect all the books, I think I would based on this one book. Good illustrations (resemble the art of the cartoonits who did Calvin and Hobbes). Simplified to the level my 4 and 6 year olds appreciated and understood. The author didn't talk down to them, rather at their level. Not too simple, though, there was plenty to learn.

Fantastic book. The true story of Jane Goodall has deeply inspired my 6.5 year old daughter. Great lessons about following your dreams, equal opportunity for women, how being smart is important and cool, care and empathy for animals, value in science and research and geographical lessons as well.I've purchased this 3 more times as presents for both boys and girls.Well written and illustrated.

Great series. My niece anxiously awaits the delivery of each new book. These books will be well worn over the years. Each book is read over and over again. She is learning history in a fun and exciting way. Dress up games have taken on a new twist. Instead of playing princess we reenact the characters of these stories.

This book is pretty much just a brief summary on Alpacas. As others have mentioned almost 1/2 the book is a rather outdated list of websites of breeders of Alpacas in the US. Also it includes a FAQ section which while could have added additional materials for learning instead it posed questions like "What is an alpaca?" and other novice questions which had already been answered in the beginning chapters of the book.I also worry a bit about copyright issues with this book as I've seen almost exact paragraphs in other pamplets and free pdfs on raising alpacas online.

Not nearly enough information for a new owner. There are not enough pictures or illustrations to explain concepts. Read it in one sitting and felt I could have done better just reading articles on the web. Not the resource I had hoped for.

This book has a small amout of very basic information. The author does not own alpacas and does not provide the type information one would desire if looking to raise alpaca. Also poorly written with many grammatical errors. I do not recommend buying this book.

This book is pretty much a scam, it has a small amount of general info, somewhat less than you would find on wikipedia. Then the author manages to stretch it out to book length by simply repeating some of the information in a "Frequently Asked Questions" section, followed by 50 pages of addresses of breeders. Thats almost 1/3 of the book! It also contains a Foreword, and Afterword, a Glossary, list of websites, extensive Table of Contents, Index, etc. Its remarkable how little info this book actually has about how to actually keep alpaca.On the cover it says "Step by Step Guide Book" but there are no steps. I was interested in information about taking care of toe problems, for instance. Well, there is a section called "Feet". Its 4 sentences long. This section is listed in the table of contents and the index, so you will have no trouble finding it. The author indicates that he and some friends invested in a male alpaca at some point, and that he would like to get more involved with actually caring for them some day. That, and looking at the internet seem to be the limit of his knowledge.This book is obviously a money grab. It would have been some use for someone considering taking care of alpaca, before the internet existed. However, this book was published in 2014. Most if not all the positive reviews are fake. Im sorry, this book is a trick.

Grammatical and formatting errors (of which there are many) aside, this book is very technical in nature and reads like a college essay on alpacas. It doesn't answer some basic questions about alpaca keeping, and it provides some information that is not factually correct. I do not recommend buying.

I found this book very informative, and easy to read, and would be a very good tool for anyone interested in raising alpacas; or simply for anyone who wants to learn more about alpacas. It began with their history and origin, then goes into the different types and colors of alpacas, and even their closest “relatives,” so to speak. I learned about the differences between the Huacaya and Suri alpacas; their fleece; how to feed and care for the different types; their body types; adaptability to weather; housing; healthcare; their unique characteristics; what it would cost to become an alpaca farmer, etc. Needless to say, this book was very informative, and would be a good addition to any library.

A stunning book photo -wise. Maybe the best bird photo collection I've ever seen, and I'm old enough to have seen almost everything (I had a photography business many years ago). I wonder whether the reviewer who gave 3 stars based upon the photographs not being well printed could have gotten a bad copy, somehow. The photos in mine are fabulous. No sign of anything less than that. Unfortunately the book is so remarkable that someone stole it before I could send it to a friend who loves owls and envies us the 2 great horned owls that are nearly always present on our property. As an aside, it would be wonderful to have more text, but there is quite a bit, and this is a photography book -- hard to have photos like these and as much text as you'd like. It is already quite a heavy book. Regarding the text, I am tempted to say how my experiences of great horned owls differ in some respects from the text about them. It would be fun to tell readers that these characters have maybe 30 -- maybe more -- different sounds they can make including prolonged barking (medium to large size dog, and we know it isn't a dog only because it is overhead), and also a perfect ear-splitting, almost terrifying, reproduction of the Queen Elizabeth's horn as it backs out of its berth in the New York City harbour. Right overhead, at 4 a.m., in pitch black darkness. (I didn't know I was so close to their tree). Just astounding.

An absolutely beautiful book. Many, many extraordinary photographs in full color, showing every subspecies (I guess) covered, from fledglings to full-grown adults, and in a wide variety of actions and attitudes. The organization is very helpful, too, done by geographical areas around the world. Accompanying texts are well written and informative, without being pedantic or too technical for the layperson. I've never seen a live owl where I live, but there must be some around somewhere in the area. Until I see one, this book is irresistible, one to be read and looked at, savored, slowly. My thanks to the authors and to Yale University Press.

Beautiful images only con is 2 of the 2 page spread images the owl faces are in the binding you have to really push the pages down to see the images fully would have been better as a pullout but otherwise i definitely would recommend this book to anyone who likes owls or nature photography lots of beautiful owls some I've never seen before most are full page size images

Beautiful illustrations; illuminating text.

As a graphic artist and 30 year shutterbug I was very disappointed in the quality of the photos in this book. I have several bookshelves full and far better photo/coffee table style books than this. The content is also lacking. We have had barred owls by us for a decade, I'd hoped to learn something more about them but the content was fleeting at best, 1 page, that was it. My local wildlife experts at our botanical gardens offered more info.The book arrived damaged as well, dust jacket was torn in multiple places including down the spine bilaterally. The book cover itself underneath had gouges in it under the dust cover. This is not a quality book. I paid for my item, it was not given freely for a review. I'll be returning it.

I like owls, and the photos in this book did not disappoint me. I am still reading the texts, but as the photos are my main interest, I quickly stop reading, and browse the photos.I once met three huge owls in a forest, one parent and two young ones. The parent dived down on me to check me out, but I did not move, and the owl flew within a foot of my face, and back to the young ones. The parent was perhaps 50cm tall, huge talons, and a beak that looked big, even in that flat face. The flying was soundless, just a silent whoosh as it passed my face. I am happy I was not considered being a pray, nor a threat.The book is strongly recommended.

This book contains fabulous photos and detailed descriptions of a most captivating animal. Highly recommended and well-worth the price (approx $26)

GTNP scale is 1:80,000 1 inch = 1.3 mi 100’ contour level. These maps are printed on waterproof, tear-resistant paper.YPK is split in half (north / south) with a generous overlap. Robust legend includes trail summaries including length, elevation gain, hiking time and difficulty. Used in combination with National Geographic Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks Road Guide: The Essential Guide for Motorists I plan them to use them as my principal navigation tools.

The National Geographic maps are great for hiking and planning trips. Because Grand Teton is relatively small the section with some of the most popular hikes is 1:31,680. the rest is 1:80,000. One warning, though, is that National Geographic has released an updated version from the 2008. I needed it right away so ordered the 2008 version because the 2015 version was back-ordered. If you have the time, wait for the 2015 version.

Excellent, detailed map. Would be nice to have a little more info on relative difficulty of the hikes, but that's available elsewhere. But those elsewhere describe the hikes, but don't show the actual topography and detail of the trails. They're useful for helping to pick out the hikes you want to take, but this is the baby you want to have with you while you're taking the hikes.

We always use these maps for hiking. Easy to read map. They haven't mislead us and are more accurate than our GPS. Plus THEY ARE WATERPROOF! I will gladly pay a little extra for a high quality map like this.

This map was really nice. I wish they would put distances in, but I really liked the clear camping zones posted. We used this while hiking the TCT, and was great to pull out at breaks and evenings to view our progress.Tip: If flying in to backpack, bear spray at the Craig Thompson Wilderness center was like $32 USD so 1/2 of REI's cost and comes with case.Hike on!

seems to be a good map. waterproof for casual moisture anyway. might be able to submerse it and still use it after drying?

Has the level of detail I need for the areas I'll be traveling too. Will be using GPS, but always nice to have back-up map and compass. If I were using this as my sole source of information I'd probably search out a more detailed map. Good quality print and materials that are rugged enough for the trail.

These maps are amazing. Very accurate and very trail worthy. Out standing quality
