About the Author

Laurance Johnston obtained his doctorate in biochemistry and molecular biology from Northwestern University (Evanston, IL). He became a regulatory scientist at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and later Director, Division of Scientific Review, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institutes of Health (NIH). After leaving NIH, he assumed the directorship of the Spinal Cord Research and Education Foundations, Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA). Supported by PVA, Dr. Johnston currently researches and writes about various alternative, complementary, or innovative therapies that expand the healing spectrum of people with spinal cord injury. He has been invited to speak at national and international meetings and is listed in Who's Who in America.

This book was well received and appreciated by my husband. His only son is a paraplegic and this book gave him some alternatives to regular medicine.

I am an RN who works in a long term facility. Recently, we have had several young patients who have suffered spinal cord injuries. As a nurse, my job is also to give unbiased information to patients. I purchased this book to become better informed of alternative treatments that I may discuss with these patients. I found it incredibly useful and informative-- especially when the medical community says "there is nothing else you can do". There are many other treatment alternatives. There is no cure, but if I can help steer someone towards relieving some painful symptoms, then I have done my job. Written well enough, that I, in fact, have given it to several patients and their family members to read as well.

I was not expecting the unbiased, extensive and well researched information this book offers. When I first received it, I put it aside until about a month later and then decided to check it out. I was very surprised. It is a good reference book for everyone who has interest in alternative methods regarding maintaining good health or correcting health problems. I purchased it because a family member deals with paralysis but found that everyone can benefit from the information it offers.

As an acupuncturist specializing in neurological disorders, I turned to this book to see what other modalities were being explored by Spinal Cord Injured (SCI) patients and their care-givers. The explanations of scalp acupuncture and qigong are presented well. Professionals curious about acupuncture as an SCI therapy might wish to refer to the books “The Acupuncture Treatment for Paralysis” by Kong, Ren, and Lu or the “Handbook of Acupuncture of Nervous Disorders” by Lu Shaojie. I bought this book mostly for the artwork, especially the color palette (so cute) and scenery (beautiful detail). I don’t particularly like the author’s styling of humans, and she doesn’t draw her black/brown characters well, as the coloring of the features of some look unrealistic. (Specifically thinking of the PE teacher who had brown skin and pink lips and cheeks.)As for the story, it’s kind of flat and almost boring. The melancholy of both the girl and ghost comes through, but the transitions between their worlds didn’t feel smooth, and there’s a random romantic interest that doesn’t feel earned. Also some parts just plain didn’t make sense or were difficult to follow.Kind of nice for a one-time read for the artwork only.

You might be familiar with Thummler’s brilliant artwork from last year’s graphic novel adaptation of Anne of Green Gables. And if you haven’t yet gotten to that gem, bump it up on your TBR pile! This is her first solo graphic novel and I have a feeling we have a lot more in store from her! It’s the story of 13 year-old Marjorie who has been thrust into the responsibilities of running her family’s laundromat and taking care of her younger brother after her mother dies and her father has fallen into a deep depression. She is just barely hanging on and resisting the awful Mr. Saubertuck who wants to run them out of business and turn their building into a spa. But then… enter Wendell. He’s a young ghost - young meaning new and young meaning died when he was young who winds up being pulled out of the afterlife world and into Marjorie’s life. He’s looking for.. meaning. And after a rocky start with Marjorie, does end up finding it. For me, the strength and charm of this book is really about the outstanding illustrations - the gorgeous pastel palette and the nuances of the wordless panels. And based on how this book is flying through my classroom, it clearly also has that all-important kid-appeal.

Trying to survive middle school with no friends and run the family laundry with no help while dad mourns is such a heavy burden to bear; and that coupled with an evil minded villain and mischievous young ghost bring anguish to Marjorie's face in many of the meaningful illustrations.SHEETS is a sad, but powerful little middle grade graphic novel about loss, perseverance, forgiveness and new unlikely friendships....plus one fine debut for Brenna Thummler.

I got an ARC copy of this book.I am going to be honest, I wanted a copy of this book solely because of how cute the ghost was in the washer. The story is a bit more deep and sad than the cover appears. Now that I have read it, I can see the sadness in the ghost. It is too much.There is so much sadness. The main character is a young girl that is raising herself and her brother, as well as running the family business. Her dad is depressed and can't function as a parent. The mother died and now everything rests on Marjorie. She wants to be a normal kid and she wants to keep her mother proud. It is a really tough life. The ghost is a young boy. You don't know how he died until near the end. You also find out how Marjorie's mother dies around the same time. It is beautifully hinted at. Wendell is not getting along well with the other dead kids, so he sneaks off to the land of the living to feel alive again. He gets caught up trying to make friends with Marjorie and the plots against her laundromat. The plot is pretty goofy which is a great juxtaposition to how sad the back story is. The drawings stay cute and there is so much going on. It is a wonderful little story. It really shows deep emotions while not being over powering. Everyone is really sad and its ok. They are sad together and learn how to move forward. It is so rare to see a book that allows a sad character to be sad. It was great to see. It is a great message for anyone. Its ok to not be ok. Wendell and Marjorie bond through their sadness and their similar tragedies. It isn't the cutest ghost story I have seen, but it is a damn close second. I would like to see more adventures in the ghost world. It would be interesting to see the world that Thummler created. I want to see more of the ghost laws.

One inch on the Delorme map gets you about 3 miles vs about 4 miles on the Benchmark. Either one you will be happy with, just my preference if all else were equal. If there was a significant price difference, go with whatever is cheaper.

Great map. I took off one star because I'd like to see some detail maps of the larger cities (Denver, Colorado Springs, and Pueblo) as well as other areas so I didn't have to combine this with GPS for city travel. I will probably supplement with a few fold maps as needed. Overall very nice. I like the pages dedicated to recreation and information.

We are planning a trip to Colorado that will include getting into so-called "back" areas, off the beaten track in order to do some hiking, camping, birding, etc., and needed an Atlas that is detailed enough to show county and town roads, unpaved as well as paved roads, and secondary roads through public lands. The Delorme Atlas and Gazetteer accurately provides that detail, allowing you to get into and back out of out-of-the-way places. We have used these Atlases in other states, and although it is possible that the maps may contain dated, inaccurate information on some back roads, we have yet to get lost! This is a great tool for determining how to get places when standard road atlases do not provide the detail to be helpful .Atlas was delivered in a timely manner and was well packaged. Very pleased with this Amazon interaction.

This is fantastic - I needed a map book for my vacation back to Colorado. I used to live in Woodland Park and there are a lot of back roads which I needed to remember since it was long ago (1980's) and I'm taking a vacation with a gf from Montana that has never been to CO so we absolutely have to do the back roads thing.

This is the ultimate road map. It shows all roads and coordinates of locations. Check the net for location, look at the atlas and "Bingo" you have it exactly. This has my best approval, especially for vacation travel.

We used this for our summer vacation to the Rocky Mountain National Park and Estes Park. We also took some day trips and this was extremely helpful since you can't always trust what the nav system says (or if you are even going to have service in the mountains). We found it to be accurate and helpful. Highly recommend.

Darkest Night was a good crossover event but it showed how not to do crossover tie-ins. There was the main Darkest Night storyline and the Green Lantern tie-in (among other tie-in’s) and the Green Lantern tie-in is crucial to the story. The two were sold in separate compilations but the stories were not only intertwined but they were interlaced so regardless of which book you read first you were getting spoilers for the other book. Forever Evil, by contrast, does it right. Forever Heroes adds to Forever Evil but it’s not mandatory to understand the story. If I had any issue I would say that Forever Heroes, as more of a backstory, should have been published first.When Gardner Fox created the Crime Syndicate of America in 1964 he didn’t really get into the origins of the original five members and I kinda liked the ambiguity. I always assumed that although they bore obvious similarities to the JLA that their origins were completely different. I was particularly intrigued by Owlman who, unlike Batman, appeared to have an actual superpower being able to somewhat control minds. Geoff Jones does a full origin story of each of the members of the Crime Syndicate and although I don’t love every origin I found it very interesting and entertaining. His origins much more closely parallel those of their JLA counterparts. Ultraman’s origin basically shows his Kryptonian parents as sadistic sociopaths which seemed a bit over the top and Jones has sometimes been a bit lacking in subtlety. Owlman, by contrast, had a very interesting origin and I love the Earth Three Alfred although the new origin somewhat ruins the relationship between Thomas Wayne Senior and Junior. I thought having Thomas Wayne Sr, as police commissioner was brilliant but I guess Geoff Jones didn’t. I take it Jones was inspired by Natural Born Killers when he created the origin of Johnny Quick and Atomica.All in all this is one of the best crossover event tie-ins I’ve ever read and was very entertaining. After the useless Flashpoint and dismal Trinity Wars I was very pleased to read such an exciting and well organized crossover. Geoff Jones can be somewhat inconsistent with his writing but when he’s on he’s one of the best and he’s on here. Let me also mention that the art is fantastic. An all-around very good effort.

As a supplemental group of stories to the Forever Evil event, Geoff Johns's Justice League Vol. 5: Forever Heroes works wonderfully. The individual issues work on their own and dovetail superbly into the greater tale being told in Forever Evil.The first several issues spend a lot of time focusing on the Crime Syndicate, looking at their backgrounds on Earth-2 either individually or in groups. This serves to add depth to the characters, and provides some motivations for their actions. I particularly enjoyed the issue detailing Owlman's origin. The origin of Grid is also detailed, and I found this helpful because that character just seemed to spring to life with no thought or purpose. Finding out about his creation filled in some missing holes. The final issue dealt with Cyborg's reconstruction after Grid split from him, and served to provide an upgrade to the character as well as cap off on of the major sub-plot points of the Forever Evil event.However, my favorite story was the background of the Metal Men. Detailing the creation of the Metal Men, this issue was particularly moving, providing some emotional depth to the characters as they receive their first real action in DC's New 52. There is a lot of potential in these characters, and I look forward to reading future stories about them.Johns has proven time and again that he can write sprawling stories, and in this collection he shows his skill with the smaller, support pieces. Forever Heroes is a great book, and does it's job as a tie-in very well; in fact, it is better than most of these types of books, which often seem forced or only distantly related.I highly recommend Forever Heroes.I received a preview copy of this book from DC Comics and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I found this book to be more about events that are significant to the main story arch, not necessarily showcasing the JLA themselves. Cyborg is the only member around to try and save them. Some great potential in this writing. As a book itself it merits 5 stars, though I can see why some would give it 4. While their is an absence of the core team. The stories are relevant and really fun. An idea would be maybe to tell each character back story at appropriate moments as opposed to all at once. These just keep getting better! a MUST BUY!!! for JL fans. keep em coming!

You should read "Forever Evil" before or after this volume as it wraps up the story arcs from Vol 3, Vol 4, and Trinity War. You could honestly get away with completely skipping this Volume unless you want to read backstory on Forever Evil.Some relevant information between Cyborg and Owlman does happen in this issue.

My advice is to get the Forever Evil full story because there is a humungous gap between volume 5 to volume 6. I got the two volumes and basically sat there and felt sorry for myself because I didn't look into getting the full story before I bought them. I had to look on Wikipedia and get the summary of Forever Evil before I read Justice League volume 6. In my honest opinion you probably don't even need volume 5 unless you want to know what the Crime Syndicate's Origins are and you like the Metal Men a lot.

I recently bought a pasta machine and was looking for a book with recipes for pasta...not pasta dishes. The description led me to believe the recipes in this book used fresh, from scratch pasta. They do not. The recipes look good, and I will use them, but now I still need to find what I thought I had ordered.Maybe they will be that much more amazing with fresh pasta in them!

I love this book! It is so well done. All recipes are quick, easy and beautifully photographed. You will feel like a gourmet every time you make one of the recipes! Each recipe also has a wine suggestion. This is great for trying new wine pairings with your meals. All recipes are so easy that anyone can make an impressive meal.

I tried a recipe from a blog for penne pasta with balsamic butter and asparagus that came from this cookbook. I loved it so much that I wanted to check out the other recipes. I've tried a spaghetti with spinach and tarragon cream sauce and a penne with cashew butter and green beans. Both were amazing. Simple and company-worthy. Definitely worth buying.

I love and collect cookbooks. But this is the ONLY pasta cookbook I have. Purchased many others, but always come back to the simple and delicious recipes in this book. Finally decided...it is the only Pasta cookbook I need.

This is a go-to cookbook in our household and has been for many years. Bought it as a gift for a friend who was in need of simple and quick recipes for weeknight dinners

Great book, received quickly by mail!

It isn't the cookbook per se. I purchased the cook book for four cents thinking the shipping charges in my basket covered the shipping charge of the book. Instead I paid separately $7.59 in shipping fees for a four cent book!. Why the fees were separate and not clearly explained upon payment is beyond me. I could have bought the book new for that price! Watch out for so called bargains.

I purchased this cookbook about ten years ago, and it has provided the directions – and the inspiration – for many excellent meals. In terms of the inspiration, the directions are on one page, and opposite is a full-page, color photograph of the finished product. I have a friend who is a photographer, and he carefully explained how devilishly hard it is to photograph prepared meals – and have them look appealing. And all of these photographs are simply perfect in that regard.There are 75 recipes in all, each with its full-page photograph. The recipes are divided into three overall sections: vegetable and cheese; seafood and poultry; and meat. As with most recipes, all the ingredients are carefully described, followed by instructions on how to properly combine them so that you (hopefully) produce a reasonable facsimile of the picture. Some recipe pages have boxes with special instruction, for example, on the rinsing of pasta.There is also an important “before you begin” section at the front of the book which provides some very useful information, for example on the cooking times for the range of pastas available: fettuccine, linguine, orecchiette, penne, tortellini, etc.My favorite recipe is the ziti with pork and escarole in creamy thyme sauce. As cooks tend to do, I have modified the original recipe beyond recognition. Instead of escarole, I now use a big bag of spinach from my favorite big box store. Likewise, I now add a large package of Portobello mushrooms. And finally, since this is New Mexico, I toss in a packet of hot chili. Good the first night, even better as “leftovers.” Overall, the book is highly recommended. 5-stars.
