A stunning book photo -wise. Maybe the best bird photo collection I've ever seen, and I'm old enough to have seen almost everything (I had a photography business many years ago). I wonder whether the reviewer who gave 3 stars based upon the photographs not being well printed could have gotten a bad copy, somehow. The photos in mine are fabulous. No sign of anything less than that. Unfortunately the book is so remarkable that someone stole it before I could send it to a friend who loves owls and envies us the 2 great horned owls that are nearly always present on our property. As an aside, it would be wonderful to have more text, but there is quite a bit, and this is a photography book -- hard to have photos like these and as much text as you'd like. It is already quite a heavy book. Regarding the text, I am tempted to say how my experiences of great horned owls differ in some respects from the text about them. It would be fun to tell readers that these characters have maybe 30 -- maybe more -- different sounds they can make including prolonged barking (medium to large size dog, and we know it isn't a dog only because it is overhead), and also a perfect ear-splitting, almost terrifying, reproduction of the Queen Elizabeth's horn as it backs out of its berth in the New York City harbour. Right overhead, at 4 a.m., in pitch black darkness. (I didn't know I was so close to their tree). Just astounding.

An absolutely beautiful book. Many, many extraordinary photographs in full color, showing every subspecies (I guess) covered, from fledglings to full-grown adults, and in a wide variety of actions and attitudes. The organization is very helpful, too, done by geographical areas around the world. Accompanying texts are well written and informative, without being pedantic or too technical for the layperson. I've never seen a live owl where I live, but there must be some around somewhere in the area. Until I see one, this book is irresistible, one to be read and looked at, savored, slowly. My thanks to the authors and to Yale University Press.

Beautiful images only con is 2 of the 2 page spread images the owl faces are in the binding you have to really push the pages down to see the images fully would have been better as a pullout but otherwise i definitely would recommend this book to anyone who likes owls or nature photography lots of beautiful owls some I've never seen before most are full page size images

Beautiful illustrations; illuminating text.

As a graphic artist and 30 year shutterbug I was very disappointed in the quality of the photos in this book. I have several bookshelves full and far better photo/coffee table style books than this. The content is also lacking. We have had barred owls by us for a decade, I'd hoped to learn something more about them but the content was fleeting at best, 1 page, that was it. My local wildlife experts at our botanical gardens offered more info.The book arrived damaged as well, dust jacket was torn in multiple places including down the spine bilaterally. The book cover itself underneath had gouges in it under the dust cover. This is not a quality book. I paid for my item, it was not given freely for a review. I'll be returning it.

I like owls, and the photos in this book did not disappoint me. I am still reading the texts, but as the photos are my main interest, I quickly stop reading, and browse the photos.I once met three huge owls in a forest, one parent and two young ones. The parent dived down on me to check me out, but I did not move, and the owl flew within a foot of my face, and back to the young ones. The parent was perhaps 50cm tall, huge talons, and a beak that looked big, even in that flat face. The flying was soundless, just a silent whoosh as it passed my face. I am happy I was not considered being a pray, nor a threat.The book is strongly recommended.

This book contains fabulous photos and detailed descriptions of a most captivating animal. Highly recommended and well-worth the price (approx $26)

The National Geographic maps are great for hiking and planning trips. Because Grand Teton is relatively small the section with some of the most popular hikes is 1:31,680. the rest is 1:80,000. One warning, though, is that National Geographic has released an updated version from the 2008. I needed it right away so ordered the 2008 version because the 2015 version was back-ordered. If you have the time, wait for the 2015 version.

Excellent, detailed map. Would be nice to have a little more info on relative difficulty of the hikes, but that's available elsewhere. But those elsewhere describe the hikes, but don't show the actual topography and detail of the trails. They're useful for helping to pick out the hikes you want to take, but this is the baby you want to have with you while you're taking the hikes.

We always use these maps for hiking. Easy to read map. They haven't mislead us and are more accurate than our GPS. Plus THEY ARE WATERPROOF! I will gladly pay a little extra for a high quality map like this.

This map was really nice. I wish they would put distances in, but I really liked the clear camping zones posted. We used this while hiking the TCT, and was great to pull out at breaks and evenings to view our progress.Tip: If flying in to backpack, bear spray at the Craig Thompson Wilderness center was like $32 USD so 1/2 of REI's cost and comes with case.Hike on!

seems to be a good map. waterproof for casual moisture anyway. might be able to submerse it and still use it after drying?

Has the level of detail I need for the areas I'll be traveling too. Will be using GPS, but always nice to have back-up map and compass. If I were using this as my sole source of information I'd probably search out a more detailed map. Good quality print and materials that are rugged enough for the trail.

The CD totally does not match the book content. The CD is labelled Level 1, 8th Edition, but they don't match. Missing/Renumbered chapters. Attached are photos of book Table of Contents, and CD Contents. They don't match!!

While this is a very popular text, this Text + CD product is a bit of a joke since the CD does not match the book! The CD skips Unit 3 entirely and has versions of other chapters that are significantly different from what is in the book. My guess is that they packaged a CD from some old version of the text with the new book, making a confusing mess. Learning a language is difficult enough without having to try to figure out what are my mistakes and where the book simply does not match the CD at all.

A fairly decent textbook that will take you from beginner to intermediate and beyond. Includes a rudimentary Spanish/English dictionary. New words are taught in a story format to give a concrete example of use. Each new unit builds on all that preceded it to reinforce learning. My only complaint is that the exercises sometimes contain words that have not yet been introduced earlier. This is a little frustrating, but the included dictionary helps a lot. The included CD supplements the material and allows you to hear native speakers conversing at the level appropriate for each level. These are intended to add value by providing additional content and not merely repeat the stories in the book. I've surprised myself with the amount of vocabulary and general Spanish that I have learned in the past 3 months using this text.

This is my favorite textbook for Spanish. Great for 5th grade and up. Uses stories and puzzles to help children (and adults!) learn Spanish for everyday life. I use this textbook for Spanish 1 and 2.

This book is used in my Spanish Classes and it is so well written and easy to use. I also like the audio disc it comes with.

This book was highly recommended to me by my assistant editor. I eagerly awaited its arrival. I was SO disappointed by it. For one thing it's about 3 inches thick! The photos of the screens, that you really need to see, are of poor quality. I could barely see them. Should have been printed on glossy paper or some other way to see them better. The book is not easily searchable. I looked in the index for some basic questions, like "How do I make scrolling titles" and couldn't find it easily. It's just not laid out well and I don't need to carry around a ten pound book! Maybe it's good for younger eyes but wasn't for me. I switched from Final Cut 7 to premier and really wanted a companion book to help me over the learning curve but for $70, 1200 pages and lousy images and organization, I would rather just hire a tutor!

Excellent resource with all of the tips, tricks and explanations lacking in other publications. Definitely geared towards the advanced Premiere Pro editor looking to expand their knowledge of shortcuts, features, best practices, troubleshooting and efficient workflows.My one gripe is the quality of the paperback edition. It is printed on light weight paper that causes 3 issues: 1. The paper bunches up as if water damaged, and lends to the book having a wavy appearance and space in between sections of pages when sitting flat. It doesn't feel high quality like a book that stays flat and compressed down under it's own weight. 2. The pages are so thin I can read through to the text on the flip side, as well as see dark blocks of the images on the flip side. Somewhat distracting. 3. Images are sometimes of poor resolution or print quality, as if printed on a standard inkjet printer. Some are dark while others that attempt to show before and after comparisons are indistinguishable. See photos for examples.I assume there was a compromise made between the page count and how thick it would be if using heavier weight, quality paper.I also highly recommend getting your hands on the PDF version as a digital reference, which Apress currently offers paperback owners for only $5 on their website. Instructions on how to get the discount are found on final pages of paperback edition.

Absolutely the most comprehensive book on Premier Pro available. I can't recommend this highly enough. It's saved me a lot of time and frustration as I've worked to sharpen my Premier skills.

Very well put together instruction book on advanced Premiere Pro tips and skills. The author has extensive knowledge and provides plenty of information and links to support topic. A must have for any Premiere Pro editor. I would be an excellent training course for classroom or online class work.

I'm a 20 year motion picture editors guild member working in broadcast TV exclusively on Avid and reading this book has finally made me comfortable enough to take jobs on Premiere. Gr 1–3—This picture book biography of Gordon Parks highlights the growth of his career as a photographer. Despite receiving little encouragement at school, Parks not only excelled at photography but also wrote novels, penned poetry, and composed music. The rich, varied text ("Boiling mad, Parks vows to lay bare racism with his lens.") is complemented by the illustrations, which sharply contrast Parks's life—mostly shown in full color—with sketches of his photographs—in black-and-white or sepia tones. Parks's career, which began with fashion shots and portraits, took off when he landed a job working for the Farm Security Administration in Washington, DC. There, he became keenly aware of the inequalities between blacks and whites and began to document these differences. When his boss directed him to talk to Ella Watson, a cleaning lady in the building, he photographed her at home with her family and produced his most famous photograph: American Gothic. An author's note provides additional information and includes reproductions of four of Parks's photographs. While the book gets off to a choppy start, moving very rapidly over the photographer's early life, it provides a much-needed portrait of a talented individual and views of his work. I really loved the way this story unfolds. Great topic. Great illustrations. My kindle version had an error, but it shouldn't make anyone miss this story.

Although I am an older photographer hobbyist, I was inspired by this true story. I think evey African American children (and parents) should read this story.

Words and pictures tell the extraordinary story of an extraordinary man. Very well done. Recommended for both library and home collections. This one is also well-formatted for the KINDLE.

Beautiful illustrations that do justice to the poetic words in this biography of a legendary artist. I was mostly unfamiliar with Gordon Parks before picking up this book, but am so glad I took the time to learn his story. He achieved enormous success during his lifetime, particularly concerning his prominence as an African-American photographer.
