One reviewer cited alleged Christian stuff in the Almanac. So I went and looked at what she cited as evidence, because I am all for avoiding Christian references in pagan or witchcraft works. But they just do not occur in this almanac. The first the reviewer gives as evidence of supposed Christianity in the Almanac is a quote from the book by Leland (of Aradia fame), wherein a witch in 1900 gives a retelling of the story from the book of Enoch (NOT a Christian text) about the Watchers and how they taught humans various arts and married some of them. The witch quoted translates the Watchers into the Fae and spins it as British folk belief. But it is simply the story from Enoch retold from the perspective of British folk belief. It's not Christian. The next example of alleged Christianity in the Almanac that the reviewer quotes is an article about marijuana that contains a reference to Rastafarians smoking marijuana to get closer to God. This is not exactly Christian agit prop, and that is as close as the article gets to anything Christian even in passing. The final example of supposed Christianity in the Almanac is a page discussing the Star card that came from Paul Huson's book on tarot. He says that some decks depicted the Star as the star of Bethlehem. That's a historical fact, not an assertion of Christianity. And that's all that is said about it.As for there being nothing about familiars, there's an entire article about familiars in there. There are also many articles about animals as they appear in folklore, in astrology, in paganism, in witchcraft, etc. Plenty for the witch's soul here.

What an extreme disappointment. Not even 30 pages in and I can't fathom reading any more of these excerpts depicting the Lord and father as our creator and the tarot being symbolic of the birth of Jesus.... Umm WITCHES almanac? We believe in the balance of the feminine and masculine divinities, but our lean is feminine. Especially in terms of creation. Not to mention, this test is supposed to have something to do with familiars and friends and I have yet to read anything on the topic. The closest mention to anything even related to familiars was an excerpt by Ivo Dominguez on page 21 which discussed the spirituality of animals.Honestly, I only get this book anymore for the calendars and horoscope, but even the horoscope seems to get weaker every year in detail. At this rate, I can purchase the witches daily planner and get as much useful info and more with material and excerpts that are at least Pagan and Witch focused. Or did we forget who pushed paganism out of our lives to begin with.To each their own, but the witches have been done an injustice in the development of our practice to be more inclusive to Christianity and have only intern adopted the practices of Christianity. Soooo why call yourself a witch? Did you hear that you can make it whatever you want? Sure, you can... But if you miss the point of a witches beliefs then just call yourself an agnostic. That is more likely what you were looking for when you thought you'd give being a witch a try.I don't know if I can keep purchasing this.

The Witches' Almanac has always been a great source of information and the contributors are expert occultists, magicians, and witches. There's a one star review here recommending some other obscure almanac. The criticism of this review is that the Witches Almanac is somehow pandering to Christian inclusivity.Out of the 208 pages, the reviewer takes a picture of three pages with three quick mentions of monotheistic history or lore, as in single sentences, to prove their case.Let's dissect those images the reviewer posted:Tarot's The Star by Paul HusonPaul Huson mentions that the Star card is related to the Star of Bethlehem. Anyone who knows anything of the Tarot knows that the tarot (particularly the Marseilles deck which predates Rider-Waite-Smith) was strongly influenced by the Christian religion and based on religious parades called Triumphs or Trumphs in Medieval Times, which is where we get the name "Trumps" for the Major Arcana before we had the term Major Arcana. The idea that someone is accusing Paul Huson of not only being a witch but pandering to Christianity is the most laughable thing I've ever heard at best and offensive to him as a Pagan Elder. PAUL HUSON! Pick up a copy of his classic Mastering Witchcraft and you will QUICKLY see that Huson is far from promoting Christianity in Witchcraft.Marijuana - Da Ma by Ellen Evert HopmanThe reviewer posts a picture mentioning Rastafari beliefs in the Bible. What the reviewer neglects is that it's one line in a long history that Ellen is laying out regarding the religious and spiritual history of marijuana. She goes over Chinese, Egyptian, Indian, African, Japanese, Taoist, Korean history and much more. Ellen Evert Hopman is a druid. There's no way that she's promoting Christianity in her article. The Witchcraft of Dame Darrel of York by Charles Godfrey LelandThe last picture the reviewer posts is an excerpt from the classic "The Witchcraft of Dame Darrel of York" by folklorist Charles Leland. Leland was perhaps the largest influence on Modern Witchcraft, particularly his "Aradia: Gospel of the Witches" which deeply influenced Gerald Gardner and his Wicca. The fact that Leland talks about "The Father Creating" while talking about the origin of faeries, isn't a promotion of Christianity. Leland is a folklorist and anyone who knows the tiniest bit of the old faery faith and its history knows that there's a long Christian influence in those beliefs, just as there is Witchcraft whether we want to rewrite history or not to exclude it.The reviewer claims there's only ONE article about familiars. That's absolutely not true. Just skimming through the book there's AT LEAST 21 ARTICLES related to familiar spirits both as animals and as non-animal spirit companions (as per the traditional view). In other words, the one star review is bunk and the person doesn't know what they're talking about or much about witchcraft at all. Arguing against the antique writings of Charles Leland, the writings of the influential witch Paul Huson, and the druid Ellen Hopman as somehow pushing a Christian agenda is absolutely ludicrous.

I was impressed by the articles and the timeliness of the issue. (My friend, the Goddess Bastet, is assisting me in making a familiar of my ghost cat this week.) There's some thoughtful stuff in this one, if you have a familiar or are thinking of obtaining one, might be worth it to pick up a copy.

I buy one every year and keep them in my library. There is a lot of nice information that you can use from year to year thanks to the way they change the focus of the content. Great series for any Witch.

always a winner

great reading and great illustrations for ALL people.

I buy this every year. I love this book. I have been buying it for over 10 years and I will continue

Both helpful and disappointing. There is some good general information here. There is some practical tips about using the Orale SOA Suite. However, code samples for the book as well as the book itself leave out key information that prevent proper implementation of his examples. Here's just one glaring illustration: chapter 4 says: "Select or create a database connection that holds the Saibot Common tables." (Saibot is a fictional airport used in the book.) So, where are those tables, what are they? The author must have had them somewhere. The online web site that supports this book is incomplete as well -- and the author is not responding to queries.

I have to agree with other reviewer that commented on examples. There are lots of steps missing, and sometimes things just don't work and you have to hunt to try to find out why.

Hard to read. Not enough screen shots after 3rd chapter. Missing the setup for the tables and DB adapter. When a book is made it should cover everything and teach us how to build full scenario including db tables and data. Otherwise what is the use.

I love this book especially its use of a real life project to illustrate the SOA concepts and technologies. I am still reading and will update my comments when neccessary.

Good for beginners and middle soa developers

it very good,

Error handling approach/recommendations should have been part of this book in a separate chapter.

The author goes through how to compute in Excel which is helpful. What I find lacking is a clear and concise definition of the terms in some cases. I’d also like to have a few more examples with visuals for discussion to help me grasp the concepts - for example, I looked up the simple definition of t-test, WHY would you compare two means of variable populations? What does that tell me about my data? Just as important to how to do something is why you’re doing it. I also don’t care for the distracting remarks meant to lighten the tone and make people more comfortable. I like to be funny in most cases, but it’s a little distracting here at times.

I DO hate stats, but this book actually is making my statistics class bearable. I'm not numerically inclined AT ALL and was terrified I wouldn't be able to get the concepts down enough for my major, but it's proven to be a good companion to my professor's lectures. I got the kindle version and I'm quite happy with it.

I can not say it will make anyone like statistics but it is better than the usual statistic textbook, for sure. It gives many other examples of why statistics are important, beyond the usual behavioral science explanations, which is cool, plus, the author totally gets that most taking statistics, are forced to take it, therefore caters to those that fit in that category and really attempts to make one‘s statistics class, not suck, as much :)

As a college student renting textbooks has been the go-to method for my classes. I have been in college for 3 years already and have had my number of textbook rentals. I know not to expect a new textbook but the quality of the textbook I received was unacceptable. It is literally embarrassing to take this textbook to class it has mold specs, coffee/water-marks, and looks like a dog chewed the corner. It is not like I have the option to return either because I am already a month into the semester and cannot afford to be without a textbook for whatever shipping period time it will take. Thanks a lot for the mold health hazard!!!! I literally have to be careful where I place my fingers to turn the page. I do not understand how people do not have common sense judgement to realize if a book has mold specs, it probably shouldn't be distributed as a rental to college students. Yes, the letters/words on the pages are legible but the mold and chewed corners are disgusting.

This book explains statistics in simple language so that anyone can understand. This is not the case for most stats books! I have taken several 500 and 600 level statistics courses, and I still go back to this book occasionally to review something or read how to explain it to someone else. I recommend this book to everyone I know taking statistics

Great book for the statistically challenged. Emphasizes the how's and why's opposed to just assigning a bunch of numbers to crunch. The only negative comment I have is related to the lack of alternate technology explained. IBM's SPSS is the only technology for which solving the equations is given. SPSS works great, but is expensive and complicated to learn, and was not required for my class. Other technology is available such as graphing calculators and MS Excel. If the book covered their use as well, I would give it 10 stars(if possible).

Easy to read, loved the interactive videos, practice with SPSS, links to research. I would have given it 5 stars but some of the answer keys did not explain well enough. There were also several correction pages that needed to be accounted for-I didn't like that. However, the author, Neil Salkind seems like a person who would make a nice neighbor or friend-funny guy!

Such a good foray into statistics, it explains so much information so well and you don't feel treated like a child, rather you are treated like a human being who has logical and sometimes silly thoughts. This book should be every professors/teachers first book for any students that are starting statistics. This makes sure that people aren't scared of statistics but excited about all the possibilities of it.

Review

"'Community Works' is... a buffet of ideas, that provides substantial food for thought about civil society in the United States." —Dwayne Walling, Charity Channel- We Review, 6/1/2001"...a valuable, thoughtful, and surprisingly practical contribution to the debate on one of our most pressing moral questions--the restoration of common civil life." —Stephen L. Carter, Yale"...the best current guide to these elusive but attractive concepts [civil society, mediating structures] and what they promise for our politics and our society." —Nathan Glazer, Harvard"...admirably compressed and cogent essays help us clarify a necessary debate--not about whether American society needs reconstruction, but rather in which directions...full of heartening signs of a maturation that all the contending ideological parties sorely need." —Todd Gitlin, NYU

COMMUNITY WORKS is a collection of 18 brief, pithy essays about civil society in America -- past, present and future, although the emphasis is on the present (mid-1990s). The essayists are academicians, activists, religious leaders, former government officials, politicians and philosophers. With such a long time perspective and so many diverse perceptions, it is hardly surprising that "civil society" is defined in nearly 18 different ways. Civil society, thus, is viewed as either hurting or healthy, declining or reviving. Regardless, several things are certain: civil society exists in America, is not dead, nor is static, and more people than ever are writing about it. COMMUNITY WORKS is a rich and complex book. It is a terrific smorgasbord of provocative thought (and some facts) both for beginners in Civil Society 101 as well as for those much more steeped in the concept and its realities. The REVIVAL in the title is a takeoff from Robert Putnam's now famous "Bowling Alone" article (1995), in which he documented (with inadequate data and observations, in this author's view) that America's civil society was losing its networks of civic engagement, and this boded ill for the nation. E. J. Dionne, Jr., REVIVAL's editor, clearly believes that Putnam overstated the case of civil society's decline. Nevertheless, Dionne includes a fair number of essays that share Putnam's pessimism, as well as a good number that reflect Dionne's optimism. Alan Wolfe opens the book by telling us not to worry that we are currently defining "civil society" in ways quite different from Locke, Rousseau, de Tocqueville, and other past observers, but to understand that we are reinventing civil society today, as indeed, civil society has been reinvented in every past era and different country/culture. The most common ground among the essayists is that civil society is not an isolation ward for the birth and nurturing of networks of trust, reciprocity, tolerance and more good things, but that civil society must coexist with government and business, both as critic and collaborator. While respecting the coexistence as fact, some, however, insist that civil society is the bedrock of government (and maybe business). Jean Bethke Elshtain leads this group, arguing that civil society provides the democratic culture for democratic government. (Francis Fukuyama in Trust made similar observations about civil society underpinning profitable global business.) Michael Waltzer and others argue, however, that government must first provide the legal and political space for civil society. Still others write that business must first provide the meat and potatoes (or peas and potatoes) before the citizens can focus on soccer, food banks, piano recitals, meals on wheels-- whatever networks create civil society values. To William A. Schambra and others, the bedrock in the coexisting spheres is neither business, government nor civil society, but the local activities that create civil society values. Theda Skocpol counters this local fixation by documenting that most local organizations historically have had substantial ties with national organizations, such as the PTA and American Legion, which "have often grown up in a mutually beneficial relationship with federal policies, including federal `tax-and-spend' programs." Cutting across the foregoing issues are political liberals' and conservatives' thoughts on civil society. According to Dionne/Waltzer, "The interest in civil society reflects (for conservatives and libertarians) a reaction against government and (for liberals and progressives) a search for stronger ground on which to rebuild responsive and energetic government." But all agree that civil society should be more important than it now is. Politicians Bill Bradley, Dan Coats and Rick Santorum speak to this, as do essayists Alan Ehrenhalt, Gertrude Himmelfarb, Bruce Katz, David Kuo and Michael Waltzer. Compelling observations are offered by Kuo on what liberals and conservatives can learn from each other about government and civil society. For example, Kuo tells liberals that "Faith matters...(It has) policy potential as a catalyst for radical change in people's lives." Or, as he tells conservatives, "Government programs can do - and have done - good...food stamps... indexing of social security benefits and medicare....Despite its well-documented failures, the War on Poverty changed the face of poverty." Last, but not least, the role of faith-based organizations in civil society is another major discussion in Revival. John J. DiIulio, Jr., Rev. Eugene F. Rivers III and Himmelfarb focus on this role. They are all quite positive about the essentials of religion in building strong civil society, though they all ascertain critical roles for government in providing support for religion and faith-based charities. Such support may be in the form of money for community development and social services (as DiIulio and Rivers suggest), but it may also be non-monetary, as value support to stigmatize immoral behavior -- "illegitimacy, promiscuity and chronic dependency" -- through legislation, judicial decisions, administrative regulations, educational requirements and tax codes (as Himmelfarb advocates). If one wants to quarrel about the value of REVIVAL, it would be that most of the essays offer opinions about civil society rather than propose theories buttressed by facts about American civil society's shortcomings or illustrious realities. The essays by Skocpol and William A. Galston and Peter Levine are exceptions to this.Robert O. Bothwell is President Emeritus/Senior Fellow of the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy, Washington, DC, USA

Leviathan series from Scott Westerfeld is one of the most imaginative reworkings of history in literature. The characters, including the great ship itself, are drawn in minute detail, so much so that one can not only see them, but smell them as well. The inventions of Darwinist and Clanker embellishing the differences between the British and German allies of the time are brilliant, deeply rooted in the personality of the opposing sides while maintaining a balance of empathy for both. Alan Cummings reading of this series shows the diversity of his talents, his mastery of accents and his unparalleled depth of character interpretation. He treats the story as if it were made of music, and he has an entire symphony at his disposal.

Completely splendid. I was a little worried about how this would end. I've loved the first two books, and after the last Harry Potter book ended a series I loved with a book I can barely tolerate, I'm leery of getting my hopes up too high. Even another of Westerfeld's trilogies, Midnighters, ended on what I thought of as kind of a bittersweet note, and I don't like bittersweet. With Midnighters, I wanted to see more because I wasn't satisfied with the ending. But with this book, I was pleased to be completely satisfied with how it ended, both the love story aspect and the rest of the plot. I'd still love to see more, of course. The story ends in such a way that the lives of Alek and Deryn definitely seem worth reading about, though as a trilogy called 'Leviathan', it's a definite ending. I would love to see more of this story. Perhaps he'll feel like writing another trilogy about Alek and Deryn, maybe picking it up during World War II, if it even happens in this world. I doubt he'll write more in this world, but if he does, I'll be eager to read it. It's been an amazing story, and a rare one in that my favorite characters are actually the main characters (usually I find myself preferring one or more of the side characters). This series is definitely one I would recommend to anyone who'll listen. As far as the reading (since I listened to the audiobook), that is also very well done. Alan Cumming is quite talented, and being able to hear all the various accents and languages that pop up throughout the story helps bring them to live and set the stage better than just reading the words. My only complaint is the way he reads Americans. His accent is simply ridiculous, and all the Americans, male and female, sound exactly the same. I guess it wouldn't have bothered me so much if it was just the reporter who sounded so farcical, but every American we meet had the same ludicrous accent. One small annoyance I had with an otherwise outstanding performance. To sum up, if you haven't read this series, do so (in order, of course), and if you've read the previous two and are wondering if this book gives a satisfying ending, yes, it really does (though it also gives the sense that the story goes on, but without failing to resolve any of the major storylines).

Is the final stretch of their adventure on the Leviathan and things are getting seriously complicated for Deryn and Alek. A simple rescue mission turns into a trip around the world escorting the infamous scientist Nicola Tesla, who may have the ultimate weapon for putting a stop to the war but at a terrible cost. Alek has finally figured out Deryn's secret and feels betrayed, confused. How can his feelings for Dylan Sharp translate to Deryn Sharp? But there's no time to think about this! With secrets revealed, old allies appearing, terrible inventions and incoming old enemies, Goliath makes for one electrifying finale to Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan trilogy!Deryn and Alek have come a long, long way since they first met in the freezing glacier where the Leviathan crash landed. They've kept each other's secret, helped each other, and saved each other countless of times. Deryn mostly does the rescuing, but now the tables are sort of turned now with Deryn having to be rescued a couple of times by Alek. It really comes in handy having someone know her secret. I've really enjoyed seeing these two characters grow through the series, and in Goliath they have to make some serious decisions. Will Alek pursue his throne, and leave Deryn behind? Will Deryn continue as a middy on the airship Leviathan and continue risking being discovered? This trilogy has been amazing from the very beginning. I'll never forget the beasties, especially the Leviathan, Tazza, and Bovril, the perspicacious loris. The Clanker machines were also incredible especially thanks to Keith Thompson and his breathtaking illustrations. The original vocabulary also made for a fun read. I would so use those curse words every single day, because barking spiders this has seriously been one of the best trilogies I've ever read. Goliath brought old allies and contraptions, but also new ones like Russian fighting bears, Japanesse Kappas, a Herculean, underwater fiber system, manta airships, and many more that just made me wish this series was longer! I'm extremely sad that it ended, and I hate leaving this world and these characters behind. I'll definitely come back to re-read this in the future.I've been saying it all along, and I'll say it again... This is steampunk at its best!!!
